    11. @shalabajza I am hoping to get into games. But I imagine, like with every media-related job, that it's a risky industry.

Friday, 16-Dec-11 08:29:20 UTC from web
      1. @yodelerty That's what I hope to get into too. Though thinking about it lately, working independently on the side while having another job seems better for me.

        1. @fallinwinter This. There's more freedom when you aren't restricted to deadlines and whatnot.

          1. @yodelerty I just feel that working on say, indie games, would be far easier to manage with a small group and it'd be easier to lead a team too instead of working for a big company where you're working on their ideas instead of yours.

Friday, 16-Dec-11 08:36:14 UTC from web
            1. @fallinwinter True, but it also would involve a higher workload due to the limited number of people. But being able to voice your ideas would be the biggest plus for indie game dev.

              1. @yodelerty Yeah, but I don't think I'd mind very much. I did a bit of programming in High School and I enjoyed it a lot. I have a sort of program project game thing I did for a year or so and it turned out pretty decently for just being me. I can plan out stories and program, it's more the graphics and maybe music that would be the biggest issue for me.

                1. @fallinwinter Programming was my favourite class in high school. I'm still pretty good at it (evident since I can fix my lab partner's code despite never going to class) even with the change from Java to C++. I've got programming down for the basics, and I can think of a few people I know who could help with story, graphics, etc.

                  1. @yodelerty Eh, I learned Python which I enjoyed a lot. This led to me finding Ren'py which is what I built my game in. It was built for Visual Novels though so it took 59k+ lines of python code just to get a battle system working. Yeesh it was a pain in the butt. Totally worth it in the end though.

                    1. @fallinwinter Yeesh. How long did that take you?

Friday, 16-Dec-11 08:54:35 UTC from web
                      1. @yodelerty Well adding to this the art, storyline, and the programming itself it took me a year or so to finish. I started summer break before my senior year in high school and finished just before the end of the school year.

                        1. @fallinwinter Well done.

                          1. @yodelerty Thanks. I think I still have it uploaded on the internet somewhere. You can take a look at it if you want. It's a bit of a download though 100+MB

                            1. @fallinwinter What's it called?

Friday, 16-Dec-11 08:59:19 UTC from web
                              1. @yodelerty Kingdom Hearts: Alter. It was a fan-game mixing the KH series with anime instead of Disney worlds. I only ever did get the first world out though. It took too much time and effort for a fan game by myself when there were other things to do.

Friday, 16-Dec-11 09:00:47 UTC from web
                                1. @fallinwinter No way! I love Kingdom Hearts! On the other hand, I don't watch a lot of anime.

Friday, 16-Dec-11 09:01:43 UTC from web
                                  1. @yodelerty It's not entirely necessary to know the anime itself. It makes a little more sense and you get more in-jokes, but it's still playable.

Friday, 16-Dec-11 09:02:48 UTC from web
                                    1. @fallinwinter Cool, I'll check it out when it's not 2 AM.
