            1. @lyokotravels Thats not too bad really. Just could use some more ram and a small overclock. Do you know what kind of ram your PC takes? I might have some extra kicking around here I could send you.

                        1. @renovatedkitchen Mine's still bleeding edge. The line has a reputation for lasting forever, though. The older D series Latitudes are freaking tanks.

                          1. @eaglehooves Mine is quite a tank. Its been through all the same tests I put my toughbook through (minus dipping it in water, punching it and dropping it from 4 ft.) and its survived. The video card is starting to go. It will sometimes give me a ton of lines on the screen, requiring a restart or something. And if I have my phone near it and I get a call or a SMS, the screen shudders.

                                1. @renovatedkitchen I've got a conventional 7200 RPM drive. I really want a bracket to convert my CD slot to another drive bay. Move my 500Gb drive there, drop an SSD into the primary.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 05:23:36 UTC from web
                                  1. @eaglehooves I was gonna do that. Picked up the SSD and was ready. Turns out the CD drive runs off PATA. So it ran slower than before. Was depressed to see this. What lappy you got?

                                        1. @renovatedkitchen I don't think it's a very expensive part. The SSD would probably be what hurts.

                                                          1. @eaglehooves well, they are actually slightly bigger than a 2.5", but have a 3.5" casing (the black part)

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:25:01 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
                                                            1. @renovatedkitchen The one I worked with looked a lot like a 2.5" fitted into a heat sink that added 1". I only got a minute or two with it before it want back where it came from, though.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:27:36 UTC from web
                                                              1. @eaglehooves ya. They are strange. But with a super high RPM speed, they are awesome fast. Like SSD quick.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:29:41 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
                                                                1. @renovatedkitchen I think SSDs are going come out on top. Comparable cost/Gb, lower power draw, and quieter.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:32:37 UTC from web
                                                                  1. @eaglehooves oh, of course. But when they first came out, velici's triumphed. Apparently they are coming out with an even faster one.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:33:52 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
                                                                    1. @renovatedkitchen I've heard they also work well in servers, while SSDs don't take heavy I/O cycles as well.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:35:39 UTC from web
                                                                      1. @eaglehooves possibly. However the servers I have use SCCSI (believe it is called). Would be good to try though.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:42:23 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
                                                                        1. @renovatedkitchen I just know my roommate burned out a sector of his SSD through heavy dropbox use. (And would you mean SCSI? The latest Serial SCSI is on par with SATA II/III, I believe).

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:47:13 UTC from web

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:50:14 UTC from StatusNet Desktop

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:53:23 UTC from web

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:54:12 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                                                                          2. @eaglehooves that's it. I often mess up short forms. Ya. SSD's do have that kind of problem. Best to do a format and write "0"'s across the board.

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:54:38 UTC from StatusNet iPhone

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:35:05 UTC from web

Thursday, 19-Apr-12 06:38:15 UTC from web

                    1. @techdisk42 She is dual quad core processors with hyper threading, so we are talking 16 logical cores... she is running 2 Intel xeon 5520's (I7 equiv) she has 12gb of tri channel ram... for vid I'm just running a Gforce gtx460... I built out most of it from CDW B-stock for under $1000

                      1. @nlghtmaremoon holy... UNDER 1000. <1000? Wow. I cannot wait till I build mine over the summer. My laptop cost over 1500 and is nowhere near as blazing fast as that must be. Just... Holy.

                        1. @techdisk42 I recently tried to do a similar build on newegg, and was shocked at how much stuff has went up in price... the quad core I7's are almost $200 more expensive then they were 4 months ago... and don't get me started on hard disk prices!

              2. @nlghtmaremoon I use my server as a PC too sometimes. If we are trying to brag, Im a year too late. Sold my epic PC. But I got my quad core server and my quad core PC. Nothing too special really.
