@eaglehooves Mine is quite a tank. Its been through all the same tests I put my toughbook through (minus dipping it in water, punching it and dropping it from 4 ft.) and its survived. The video card is starting to go. It will sometimes give me a ton of lines on the screen, requiring a restart or something. And if I have my phone near it and I get a call or a SMS, the screen shudders.

@renovatedkitchen Mine burned out a hard disk, but that was because I covered the vents, thinking it was hibernating. Otherwise I've been problem free.

@eaglehooves I always make sure my vents are covered. most of the time the fans are at 100% anyways. I got one of those hybrid seagate HDD's. Its really nice actually. Responds nicely. I like to hear it whine when I spin my computer in the air.

@renovatedkitchen I've got a conventional 7200 RPM drive. I really want a bracket to convert my CD slot to another drive bay. Move my 500Gb drive there, drop an SSD into the primary.

@eaglehooves I was gonna do that. Picked up the SSD and was ready. Turns out the CD drive runs off PATA. So it ran slower than before. Was depressed to see this. What lappy you got?

@eaglehooves ya. Get either a high end intel one or the high end OCZ one. Both are great choices. Any cheaper any you might as well have bought a velociraptor HDD. Minus the annoying sound.

@renovatedkitchen The one I worked with looked a lot like a 2.5" fitted into a heat sink that added 1". I only got a minute or two with it before it want back where it came from, though.

@renovatedkitchen I just know my roommate burned out a sector of his SSD through heavy dropbox use. (And would you mean SCSI? The latest Serial SCSI is on par with SATA II/III, I believe).

@techdisk42 She is dual quad core processors with hyper threading, so we are talking 16 logical cores... she is running 2 Intel xeon 5520's (I7 equiv) she has 12gb of tri channel ram... for vid I'm just running a Gforce gtx460... I built out most of it from CDW B-stock for under $1000

@techdisk42 I recently tried to do a similar build on newegg, and was shocked at how much stuff has went up in price... the quad core I7's are almost $200 more expensive then they were 4 months ago... and don't get me started on hard disk prices!
