That is a bloody good question i've just heard... If prostitution is supposedly the worlds oldest proffesion, then at some point thousands of years ago it would have been the worlds ONLY proffession, which begs the question: at that point in time, how did everyone make the money to pay for it?

@purplephish20 I think it means the oldest profession that is still around? I don't know.

@purplephish20 Would've been goods traded for it, rather than money paid for it. Bartering for services (of any kind) is a very old concept.

@bitshift but wouldnt the trade of goods in itself constitute a proffession?

@purplephish20 Trade occurs when I have something you want and you have something I want and we can agree on an exchange ratio. In barter, no matter how much stuff I have if you don't want any of it I'm functionally broke. With money you can have something that everyone wants such that you can always get what you want with it if you have enough.

@purplephish20 It's only a profession (there's only one f in this word. Why doesn't your web browser have built-in spell check?) if it's something you do repeatedly for a living. If you came across the item you are trading incidentally or search for it once specifically to pay a cost, then it's not a profession. The mere act of trading itself does not constitute a profession.

@purplephish20 I don't know of any modern browser that doesn't have it. What browser are you using?

@purplephish20 Please upgrade your version of firefox. It's had spell check since *at least* version 3, possibly earlier.
