    1. @nerthos what a beauty! Persians knew their decorative blades.

      1. @awl Persians had master artisans in quite a few areas, like weaponcraft and architecture.

        1. @nerthos they also housed the most used calligraphic form of the arabic writing systeme to this day, seen on that blade.

          1. @awl I need to learn arabic. I love the way it looks.

            1. @nerthos it's absolutely perfect for short-hand writing. I know a few words and phrases in arabic, picked up over the years, but learned the systeme to write turkish and other languages that used it.

              1. @awl Doing some gothic calligraphy today sparked my interest on the whole discipline again.

                1. @nerthos oh? Like medieval gotiska, or like fraktur?

                  1. @awl Did this for my mother's birthday present. She loves that type of calligraphy but hates doing it, as far as I remember. http://imgur.com/ZfC6NT9

                    1. @nerthos fantastic! Look like larger characters and those "s" are a pain.

                      1. @awl Oh god the S. The S was a torture. Took me twice as much time as the other two. Ended up doing a semi-custom S because the ones from the references I felt like I'd screw up.

                        1. @nerthos lol, trying a quick copy of the image on paper and i'm not even trying the "s". http://rainbowdash.net/url/699473

                          1. @awl I spent about 40 minutes on it I think. Did some tries on paper beforehand. http://imgur.com/UId0bgQ

                            1. @nerthos the angle of the "s"... I feel like it should be barely acute like a horse bob ing his head back of his neck and down? In other words pretty much like what you had at the bottom.

                              1. @awl It's trial and error

                                1. @nerthos pretty much, even for those in high practise.
