Sometimes I look at the US and start to think about how much stuff gets released there and never makes it to Canada. Then I realize that, wow, you guys don't even have microchips in your credit and debit cards. Like, seriously, Magnetic strip is just so terrible.

@techdisk Magnetic strip is good enough.

@nerthos not when a magnetized wallet can just erase it. Or a simple scratch. Or the many times you swipe it simply wearing it away.

@techdisk 1) why would a wallet be magnetized, and how? They're usually cloth, leather or plastic, materials that can't magnetize normally. 2 and 3) if you are in the least careful, it lasts far beyond the time you renew it.

@nerthos clasps. Purses have magnetized clasps. And those can be quite powerful.

@techdisk Oh right, people use those. I usually avoid them, rather going for classic belt-like fastening.

@techdisk Except you're completely wrong and we do? Touch-and-pay is quite a thing here.

@redenchilada I mean using a chip, like a SIM card in your phone. All our cards have it, and honestly touch and pay is even worse because your credit card info can be stolen quite easily with the right equipment.

@techdisk Wouldn't the chips suffer from the same problem?
Thursday, 14-Aug-14 05:17:38 UTC from web-
@redenchilada ever looked at your SIM card? Its the exact same technology. So, no. Hard metal wins over melted plastic.

@techdisk How do you... use the card then? Is it swiped the same way as a magnetic strip card is?
Thursday, 14-Aug-14 05:20:50 UTC from web-
@redenchilada You place it against a reader. I use one for the bus.
Thursday, 14-Aug-14 05:22:22 UTC from web-
@nerthos Oh.

@redenchilada we put it into a slot, kinda like an ATM. It reads the chip with half the card sticking out.
