  1. It's okay to like a piece of media in spite of some problematic elements it may have, but acknowledging those elements critically is an important step in healthily engaging with your media. Ignoring sexism in games and gaming won't make it go away.

    1. @northernnarwhal I believe that this also branches out into the creator vs creation...thing? It's the ability to disconnect a creator's beliefs from their work, despite any influence the creator's beliefs may have had on their work. For example, I love Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood, but I think Doug TenNapel is a huge hateful bigot and I refuse to support his games, I didn't back Armikrog, but I did pirate and play it. I really enjoy Armikrog despite the fact that one of the guys behind it has beliefs that I don't support. But what would I know, I'm just a dumb kid.

      1. @bobo Yup! There's a whole branch of critical studies on that, it's generally referred to as the death of the author. A creator's interpretation of their work isn't necessary any more valid than any individual's interpretation of said work, that's a foundation criticism of any media works on. A good example I like to use is that Lovecraft was a huuuge racist and xenophobe, but I've read and enjoyed a ton of his works in spite of some of his views being reflective in his works because I think he has excellent prose and narrative structure.
