I refuse to think Trump will be a terrible president regardless of what people say, because they did the exact same about Macri here, how he'd destroy all jobs, sell off the country, had ties to the dictatorship, and a whole bunch of similar crap, and since he took office he has done nothing bad at all, in fact he's been the most competent president in decades so far.

@nerthos I'm not going to take the perspective of a feudalist on what qualifies a "competent" president

@rarity I might be a feudalist, but he hasn't done things my way, he has done them the constitutional way, even when he could have abused his power more than once. In fact I complain about how lax he is in the prosecution of corrupt government ex-officials, who have personally attacked him. He's extremely lawful in everything he's doing, and all the complaints about him are because unlike the last government, he doesn't hide inflation, poverty, the state of infrastructure, nor tries to cover up lack of employement with pointless state jobs (which used to be given exclusively to followers of the party in power by the way, and has since changed to purging the overcrowded state offices of people who weren't qualified for their job, regardless of political affiliation). He's not a good president in the sense that he does what I want him to do, he's a good president in that he's doing everything by the book regardless of insults flung at him.

@nerthos Well, I don't see Trump exactly doing things "by the book". He's advocated war crimes, a trade policy that seems out of this world to the American Left AND Right, and a foreign policy that mostly boils down to "bomb the apple out of them", regardless of who "they" are. He's also advocated for tightening press freedom, something I find absolutely baffling. There's no way he won't be terrible, unless he's lying about EVERYTHING he says he will do.

@rarity That last sentence is interesting to me because I've had this theory (a desperate hope, more like) that he's taking a page out of Nixon's book and pretending to be an absolute lunatic to expand his press coverage and deter our enemies.

@rarity Well, I'm not saying he CAN'T be a disaster, but I won't tell myself he absolutely will be until he actually does anything bad.

@nerthos There's a chance he might not be anything terrible, but I'd rather go with the devil we know honestly. It looks like it's going to be Trump v Clinton unless Bernie can pull one out of his ass, and even though I hate Clinton and her warhawk ways, I'd rather deal with another 4 years of the current administration than take the Trump risk. Obama hasn't been great but he hasn't destroyed the country, like I legitimately worry Trump could do.

@rarity @nerthos Yeah, that's the thing. I HATE Clinton. Hate everything about her. But at least four years of Clinton after Obama would be like four years of Bush after Reagan. Just more of the same until somebody better comes along and steals re-election.

@nerthos MY big issue with Trump, personally, is the effect he would have internationally. America is already seen as this evil, imperialistic country and I don't think electing a guy who wants to sever ties with a nation it shares a border with, keep Muslims in internment camps, force countries to build walls for him, and give nukes to every country in east Asia is going to help with that very much.

@mrmattimation Well, that I can understand, as it'll likely be a PR mess, but as far as internal affairs goes he doesn't seem any less competent than the other option.
