I'm pretty much a freak, but I've never pretended to be anything else. I always get a little amused when the socjus crew talk down to me about how these yuppie hipster lot are actually the oppressed ones though. The have no kiwiing clue.

@nerthos I dislike people whom hijack legitimate compassionate activism for social credit. They literally do harm in the name of good and it disgusts me.

@maiyannah Exactly, hence why I compared them to jihadist terrorists. Grabbing a "cause" to have a sense of entitlement, and feel like they have purpose, while at the same time sabotaging said cause with every action and making the world despise that cause.

@nerthos It is a shame that 'social justice', 'feminism', and arguably 'environmentalism' are causes co-opted by this sort of mindset.

@nerthos They're all worthy causes whose reputation in the mainstream has become damaged by these poseurs.

@maiyannah Yep. If you want to do anything real for those causes, the first thing you have to do is drop the tag, as they're poisonous at this point.

@nerthos I still call myself a feminist, but mostly because I'm a papaya and it triggers goony manbeard "feminists" more than anything :P

@nerthos I think that one's a little more nebulous because the mainstream's tweaked onto the fact that PETA are extremists. Now only if we could make them realise the same of some of these other groups.

@maiyannah I always disliked the word "feminism" even before it became a fad. I'm all in for true equal rights for both genders, but I can't take someone seriously if they call themselves "machoists" or "feminists" as that word has a clear implication that they fight for that side and not for both.

@nerthos Oh I agree, but the alternatives like "humanism" were rife with that lot of socjus FrankerZ even before "SJW" was a common part of the vernacular, so its kind of an imperfect solution. I have a fair few "MRA" friends whom have agreed with me on a lot of topics, and there's common ground to that equality.

@maiyannah Then again, I'm against things like "human rights" and such, so I wouldn't get behind something called humanism. I always say I just support gender equality. I don't think all humans deserve rights or protection, they should be earned depending on the quality of the person. "person's rights" or such. If you're good you get more protection, if you're bad your rights are taken away. I'm aware that human rights are a failsafe, an imperfect solution for a world that'd otherwise abuse and misinterpret distinctions, but that doesn't mean that I'll accept that humans deserve something just for being born.

@maiyannah Oh. My main issue with the english-speaking world is the obsession with shortening things, half the time I don't know what those loose letters are supposed to mean.

@nerthos I do and I do not. I'm fairly pragmatic in that sense. If they do not injure or bother me, I afford them tolerance and sometimes compassion. If they are close to me I will defend them and see to their needs. If they make themselves my enemies, then I deal with them accordingly.

@nerthos There is a place for following the heart and a place for being more objective. I would argue many people do not know these boundaries.

@nerthos I am a woman of a likely brief lifespan. I do not desire to waste my time on the foolhardy, manipulative, or the hostile. Where I can, I avoid them. Where I cannot, I either try to deal with them promptly, or where I have to, dispatch them.

@maiyannah That's good enough for me. I'm an idealist who intends to live long, and I consider myself a paladin in the sense of being good to good people, and ruthless to bad people. Putting always justice above everything else, and by that I mean honor-based justice and not social justice. But I understand your reasoning to be as you are and it's completely fine. If everyone was like that, we would have way less worries.

@nerthos A shorter life lends itself to more direct thinking; this is something many historians don't consider I find.

@nerthos A curious thing you'll never find on Game of Thrones or similar shows is that a man or woman was considered an adult when they were 11 in medieval Europe. By the age of 12 a man (or a woman if she led the household) was expected to own and know how to use a sword and participate in manhunts for dangerous criminals.

@maiyannah Pretty much. I acknowledge that basic difference in our way of thinking, as I'm guaranteed to live to at least 80 unless I'm reckless or get sick, so I plan things accordingly. A shorter life means focusing more on the now and on enjoying it as much as possible.

@maiyannah Oh, I'm completely aware of that, as I'm a middle ages enthusiast. Part of the reason why I so strongly despise those that pretend people are kids until 18 and protect and restrict them as such.

@nerthos It is curious how 'realistic fantasy' (as GRRM himself called GOT) tailors itself after modern expectations, rather than one of a proper historical context. People can make whatever fantasy they like, but it is interesting all the same.

@nerthos I think I'm the only one that pointed this out in Brytenwalda reviews. But being a medieval history buff I almost immediately clued into that age gap despite the realism claim. (And Brytenwalda is meant to be in the same vein of historical low fantasy as Darklands, where it's meant to be a depiction of that historical time as if the myths of that time were indeed real.)

@maiyannah I think a big part of it is having to be revisionist to have a market. If you're too realistic, no one will buy it.

@nerthos Well, it also has to do with the fact that any mention of sexuality in a historically accurate simulation would probably fall afoul of child pornography laws as well, which just goes to show how stupid those laws can be sometimes.

@maiyannah I enjoyed the saga of hrolf kraki a few months ago, that was exactly that. A novel based on historical records and songs/prose, on the concept of "what was believed then is considered real". They didn't do this revisionism though, with some characters leading an army at 13, and getting married at that age or earlier.

@maiyannah Yep. One of the many issues of our current society (mostly euro/american society) which is at large unable to understand other societies and see things in context.

@maiyannah I remember when I was a mod here and this russian kid started arguing with someone, and everyone was outraged. They were literally oblivious to the fact that by his cultural standards, he was saying nothing bad at all.
