  1. 24/36/48 × 11-32t is pretty good for touring in my experience. !cycling

    1. Sometimes I feel like I'm the one guy who still likes triple cranks.

      1. @takeFrankerZakenji I at least like mine but really don't have much experience with much else

        1. @awl A lot of mountain bikers have switched to 1×11 setups, while roadies dropped the triple a decade ago because gear clusters in the back have acquired enough range for a double to cover most of road riding.

The downside of fewer chainrings means bigger gaps between gear ratios, but with integrated shifters allowing quick flipping between them, people aren't as annoyed with doing so anymore.

          1. @takeFrankerZakenji One of the things that most appealed to me with the le Tour was the subtlety between gear selections and basically I look at the three rings like this; high for meandering, middle for commuting, low for when I really want to punish myself. There's still enough subtlety between shifting on the cassette even without cross-chaining.

            1. @awl I usually use the big ring for downhill and tailwinds, the middle ring for general riding, and the granny ring for 'real' climbing.

I have a bike with a 30/46 double and a wide 12-36t cassette, and the big gaps on the larger side of the cassette (when on the 30t ring up front) make me miss having a narrower cassette paired with a triple…only when I'm riding it with a lot of load.  That bike isn't usually pressed into that duty, though, but the one I would've used on that ride was having its tired frame repaired.

              1. @takecherryakenji Never did get the measurements for my cassette unfortunately, didn't take apart the rear wheel either. Everything driveline and brake wise on it is original excepting the brake cables.

                1. @awl If that's all original, it's probably a thread-on freewheel and not a slide-on cassette.

                  1. @takeFrankerZakenji Yup, I just checked the wheel for true and endplay after mounting the new tyres.

          2. @takeFluffle Puffakenji I still have a 3x6 which works just fine

            1. @nerthos The bike I use for off-road touring is 3×7 and does a great job.  It was originally a used mountain bike, and now everything's been replaced—including the frame and fork—except the front derailleur, which happened over a year or so of hard riding.

              1. @takeFluffle Puffakenji I got mine as a birthday gift when I was 10, haven't really changed anything other than pieces that got eroded with use and rubber pieces that degraded over the years.

                1. @nerthos you're able to use the same bike you used at 10? Wouldn't it be small

                  1. @rarity Nah the one I had when I was 5 is about the size of a bmx, the one from 10 is a... I don't even know how to translate it. Rodado 26, standard adult size. When I was 10 I was about 1.60m so I could comfortably use man sized bike with the seat all the way down, and I just had to change the seat's position over the years.

        1. @rarity That was the same colour mine was before it got stripped. My tyres were never that loud though. It's a beauty.

          1. @awl we'll see if no one snatches it up

    3. @rarity Those colours make the bike look poisonous

Wednesday, 22-Jun-16 00:06:04 UTC from web
      1. @nerthos @rarity Tall frames are usually cheap because there's little demand.  You know, human height bell curve and all.

You can tell that one was too tall for the current owner because the saddle is slammed all the way down.  They probably can't even stand over it with both feet planted without singing a high note!

        Wednesday, 22-Jun-16 00:10:41 UTC from gs.kawa-kun.com
        1. @takegrapeakenji @rarity @awl it actually looks comfortable for sport biking, but the colours along with the frame shape make it, to me, a huge eyesore.

          1. @nerthos the more fluorescent and obnoxious the bike the faster it does duh

            1. @rarity Makes sense.

          2. @nerthos Like @takepapayaakenji said it's really tall too, but I have a love for the old Schwinn-approved designs. Plus that vibrance was just part of the salesmanship back in the day.

            1. @awl I'm more of a fan of the classical early 2000s designs. http://mla-s1-p.mlstatic.com/bicicleta-halley-mountain-bike-classic-19100-rodado-26-gtia-13700-MLA137918322_1014-F.jpg
