  1. The biggest issue with Risen gameplay-wise is the camera focus sudden switches that happen when fighting a group of enemies, that make the already hard task of keeping an eye of them and avoiding attacks from multiple directions even harder.

    1. @nerthos Risen was one of those games a lot of critics called banana that was just "okay" but not really as bad as they said it was.

      1. @maiyannah I'm enjoying it. I never pay any attention to critics at all. It's just a more modern Gothic, and like the original games, it's not for everyone. It breaks out from many mainstream design trends regarding RPGs, but that's not good nor bad, just takes the right person to like it.

        1. @nerthos I'm a critic :^)

          1. @maiyannah Yeah, and that's why I just listen to your opinions on games but don't decide based on them. Considering everyone has different tastes, picking based on critic reviews can be detrimental unless you read someone who has the exact same taste you have.

            1. @nerthos This is why I try to unpack the game mechanics in the reviews I write, because the same stuff I might be railing on for being apple for whatever reason may be mechanics you or someone else reads and goes "hey, that might be interesting" or even just "yeah I can get that but it isn't a big deal for me"

              1. @maiyannah Haha, yeah. One of the reasons I'm not condescending or annoying to you like I am towards many other critics.

              2. @maiyannah @nerthos Basically you try to go for a degree of objetivism in it, rather than talking as the foremost authority on the matter.

                1. @nerthos I try to avoid that kind of allocution, acting like I know better than most, because it's the same behaviour out of other critics that drove me to pick up games writing again full time because I felt I can do better.  So often these critics don't offer in-depth explanations of any kind, just "I know better than you" or some stupid variation thereof.

                  1. @maiyannah Pretty much the reason of my standing on the matter of critics.

                    1. @nerthos I'm not better than anyone.  I'm just writing opinions of games and explanations of them, and if people find them useful they subscribe and support my work.  I think a lot of the resistance to subscription models rather than ads, with modern games journalism, comes from a place of not even wanting to be humble about it, because you have to, in that kind of patron model.

I'm just glad I've cultivated an audience that likes the debate of such topics rather than the mindless mainstream "omg you gave my favourite game a less than perfect score you teh suck!!1oneone!"

                      1. @maiyannah Fair points. I suppose I just ended up growing a mistrust of all kinds of reporting or media due to seeing way too many either shady or unqualified examples of it.

                        1. @nerthos I support the good and ignore the bad.  Which means I don't support much, but hey, that's how the cookie crumbles.  The only people I really follow anymore are Tweed and Ross Scott.  I do try to pick up the occasional real review Yahtzee Crowshaw writes, but those are rare these days.

    2. @nerthos So five moths that are above my level get really annoying due to it.

    3. @nerthos That was always a problem with that game developer. Gothic 1 + 2 + 3 were all clunky gameplay-wise and the camera was ranging from "stiff" to uncontrollable.

      1. @adiwan It is. Risen is much more player-friendly but it would really benefit from a camera lock button to switch from auto-focus to locking on an enemy to free camera.
