    1. @rarity Urdu, even though relatively young in its evolution, serves more as a bridge between the links of Persian and Hindu (arguably Sanskrit's closest relative) in the greater Aryan languages. This is amongst a lot of other things however.

      1. @awl well Urdu really isn't even a language, to be fair. I'd go as far as to say that spoken Urdu is more similar to Hindi than various dialects of Arabic are. Urdu and Hindi are easily mutually intelligible, while various forms of Arabic are not.

        1. @rarity True. I might have been thinking of Hindustani or Gujarat as the whole missing-link thing. That particular piece of Asia saw a flux of all sorts of cultures and their influence shows in different ways.

I haven't had linguistics talk in so long. I foget how fun it is.

          1. @awl well I love linguistics, and if it wasn't so much work I would have gone to college for it. Instead I'm gonna go back someday for religious studies

            1. @rarity much like my liking of cars became burnt out by working in a garage so has my love of language taken a few steps back by translating more or less for a living.

              1. @awl well, that's me with radio. big surprise, doing something enjoyable mandatorily for survival will take the joy out of things

                1. @rarity Yeah, I suppose, unless you mediate it somehow. At least I don't hate it like I hated cars, pretty much until very recently.

                  1. @awl maybe the ultimate life is doing odd jobs based on your latest fancy

                    1. @rarity Unless your fancies take on forms that require a tonne of schooling of course

                      1. @awl you can learn a ton of banana online though. Unless you suddenly have a desire to get into surgery it shouldn't be a problem

                        1. @rarity Well any heavy profession which calls for a piece of paper proving you put in the time. Did you know to fly for major carriers you have to have a Bachelor's degree before they even look at you?

                          1. @awl like, a bachelors degree on top of whatever flight school you have to take?

                            1. @rarity yeah. I was going to go into the four-in-three programme but I'm doing two for an Associate's. It would take the same amount of life I've lived to see what was my original goal.
