@kfist When I was still living with my parents nearly a decade ago, I learned how to drive in my father's truck. When he got a Prius for his long commute, he let me treat the truck as my own, but promised to take care of the maintenance.
"Check engine" light came on, he said to wait for "check gauges." "Check gauges" light came on, he still didn't do anything.
One morning, I was driving to the park and ride to take the bus to university, and the truck's engine seized on the freeway when climbing up a hill. I had enough momentum to get over to the left shoulder without especially disrupting traffic, and called home and a tow truck.
The truck's still sat in my parents' driveway to this day, its engine completely unrepairable. My father's talked all this time about getting another engine for it, but still hasn't gotten around to it.-
@kfist This story isn't why I don't have a car now. I just hate driving, moved to the city, and the last car I had sat in my parking space for six months before I sold it.

@awl Cars seem like they're zero-maintenance until you actually give them zero maintenance.
