  1. Hummm... Wonder how Geolocation will work without a GPS

    1. @nlghtmaremoon Guess it doesn't

      1. @nlghtmaremoon It could work through Google's Wi-Fi service (assuming we're talking about Android). It won't be able to track your exact location, but it should be able to at least know in what area you are due to the IP address.

        1. @omni Actually, given the locations they have associated to various MAC addresses (which is apparently what they were trying to get when they infamously kept, however briefly, an awful lot more wifi data), I wouldn't be surprised if you could triangulate your position pretty accurately in any area with more than one or two access points.

          1. @bitshift That makes sense. Dammit, Google's power is really scary, when you think of it.

            1. @omni Yeah. They seem pretty much benign (if sometimes misguided - c.f. the dogged insistence on real names on G+ for several months) at this point, but they could seriously be a significant threat if they were to work towards malicious ends, given the resources and influence they have.

              1. @bitshift True, true. I do honestly trust Google more than most big companies, though. Even though they have insane amounts of power, I've seen them defend their users, no matter if they turned out guilty or not, in court by censoring as much information before giving it to governments as they're legally allowed to. I mean, being honest, I wouldn't mind going without them (and am slowly trying to work towards that, but I've build up quite a dependency throughout the years by using stuff like Gmail) but even then, I'd rather give all my info to Google than to a company like Microsoft or Facebook.
