All I've learned from not doing my job this morning is that getting a temporary work Visa in Canada is as confusing as it is expensive.

@renovatedkitchen I'm sure they are. It's just a bit daunting to even figure out what kind of visa I should be trying to get. The Skilled worker ones are shut down till Jan 2013, but I can't see the difference between getting one of those, and getting a temporary residence visa, applying for a job, and having them sponsor me for a temporary work permit.

@ceruleanspark if you want to stay here for good, do it properly. If not, pretty much anything works

@renovatedkitchen Citizenship is a whole other game from what I'm looking at here. You more or less need to have a job in canada already to get citizenship, which means I NEED a temp visa that allows me to work.

@ceruleanspark It's still better than the american system, whereby you can only get a visa if you already have a visa.

@ceruleanspark well, I really hope it all goes well. Canada takes in (too) many immigrants. But jobs aren't sparse. Lots of people here are just too lazy to work.

@renovatedkitchen Well, they let my friend in, and he's literally exactly as qualified as I am, so I figure I have a fairly reasonable chance once the CSWP or whatever they're called re-open in the new year. It's that or throw myself off or under something, really.

@ceruleanspark ya. The US is too strict with many of their things. I'm proud to call myself a Canadian.

@ceruleanspark if things are that bad there, Canada will be fabulous. That's great news! :) I'm sure you will be able to get in no problem. Remember to make that pit stop in Toronto, eh!

@renovatedkitchen My plan was to do a bit of travelling and see what parts I "liked". The guy who's offered me a room is in Vancouver, but there's no need for me to stay there indefinitely.

@ceruleanspark ah. Gotcha. Well, if you come here in the summer time, I would be sure to take you around to places. Do you prefer the city life, country or country?

@renovatedkitchen I like everything. I'd love to see Canada's countryside, do some hiking and stuff. Maybe even some proper climbing. I also like cities though, so seeing whatever metropolitan sights there are would be cool too.

@ceruleanspark well, come in the summer time (or at least when it's warm) and I'll show you around. Toronto is in a great location where the country is a 30min drive from the city. I'll take you up to Huntsville/Barrie, Waterloo (if you'd like. It's nothing special there, just it's west of here), to Quebec (can stop by and take minti if he wants to come because he's never been there and is along the way) and then we could drive down to Niagara Falls and go to the US (if we can).

@renovatedkitchen Apparently crossing the US border from Canada if you're on a temporary visa is a horrific nightmare, so that might not be the best idea, but the rest sounds like fun :3

@ceruleanspark yeah. I figured there was some rule against it. Silly Americans. It will be tons of fun. When we go up north, I'll see if my friend wants to come and we can spend some time at his cottage. It's on skeleton lake which is supposed to be the clearest lake in Ontario. All will be possible, just need to find another car to use as a daily. Won't be hard. They sell for pretty cheap.

@eaglehooves Given that my friend was locked in a cell for 5 whilst the border guards more or less wrecked his car, they'd have to be pretty goddamn spectacular for the US side to be worth it.

@renovatedkitchen I don't know. I was there years ago, and all I remember wad that the Canadian view was better.

@ceruleanspark ...it's been way too long since I was in Canada. Last time I was there I was with a friend's parents with just a birth certificate and a letter.

@eaglehooves I think the issue was that he was a British citizen trying to leave Canada to enter America on an English passport.

@ceruleanspark That doesn't sound like something too hard to figure out, but then again customs is insane now, so that sounds about right.
