Anyone have any idea whether or not I can get historic ionospheric data for the east coast of the US over the past week?

@ceruleanspark ionoshericwhatsis? I don't even know what that is!

@ceruleanspark I really want to say it should be available, and I'd almost say there's likely a .gov for something like that, but... I got nothing. =/

@scribus I was looking yesterday because I wanted to see if there was ionospheric heating as a precursor to the east-coast earthquake as there was in Japan.

@ceruleanspark I keep wanting to say US Geologic Survey, but that's ground. Relating to the 'quake, they might, but... I dunno.

@scribus Who owns HAARP? They'd probably know. I can get data from the australian government but it's not historic or high-resolution enough.

@ceruleanspark Do you want the "real" answer or the "incomprehensible conspiracy nut" answer? :p Seems it's a joint deal w/ the Air Force, Navy, UofAlaska, and DARPA.

@ceruleanspark There was none. Here is the D-Region Absorption Plot just before the quake hit at 17:51 UTC: http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/stp/drap/data/2011/08/23/SWX_DRAP20_C_SWPC_20110823175000_GLOBAL.png

@astra Whoa. Ponies deliver! Thank you for that.

@ceruleanspark Glad to help! I tend to keep an eye on space weather data, and that's one of the sites I regularly check.

@astra I was just particularly interested in that quake because it seemed kind of anomalous.

@ceruleanspark No, nothing like that. Not sure exactly what caused this one, other than, "It was overdue." As far as the correlation between atmospheric ionization and major earthquakes, I do believe that there is a link, but I don't think that it is anything nefarious, and I don't think that the ionization even causes the quakes, but rather amplifies them when a region is already unstable. None of this is terribly pony-related, though, so I won't bore you (and everyone else here) with numbers and dates and maps and etc. ;)

@astra I was under the impression the ionisation had a known source? (something to do with radon being released from the deep earth as part of a precursor process to the quakes, which is why it showed up beforehand). I don't know. I am far from an expert on Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling.

@ceruleanspark Wish to discuss this, but don't want to bore folks who want to talk about ponies and school and gaming. ;) Will take this to PM, if you'd like.
