  1. @techdisk42 Ubuntu is based on the linux kernel, the kernel being the bit of software in every OS that commicates the OS' desires to the hardware it's working with (CPU, GPU, RAM, HDD, etc..), Ubuntu has a package manager called APT where with some simple commands any binary program in it's reposity can be automatically downloaded and installed, it is an opensource project which means anyone can see all it's code and make changes and submit those changes (bugfixing, helping to develop features, etc..), these projects are usually managed by a meritocracy or a by the dev team voting for team leaders and project leaders and such; Ubuntu is based on the debian GNU/Linux distro, I used 'GNU/Linux' because that referes to the GNU tools that make the userland that is the place most ponies are using all the time (the programs that make things work), the Linux bit is because the distro is using the Linux kernel, try not to make the mistake of calling it a linux distro, it's a GNU/Linux distro
