from my admittedly limited knowledge on the subject, it doesn't really seem like there's a reason to drop ostatus #nsfw tag on mastodon besides bloat removal. but mastodon isn't a suckless project, a little bloat is fine. pleroma also has this "bloat" to appeal to gnusocial standards.
i think a big problem is pleroma being looked at as gnusocial 2.0 when many services are still going to use gnusocial on ostatus for its GNU connections, and others use services like friendica or diaspora -

This week alone, 4 dogs have been poisoned in a village near mine in Greece... and there is one that lives there, Danae, who I absolutely need to rescue from this danger. She is about 2 years old, fixed, ca 25kg, super friendly and playful.
If you know ANYONE who could either foster her or was hoping to adopt a dog: please, please get in touch with me!
I have to deal with a lot of heartbreak caring for Greek strays, but I cannot lose her. I cant take her myself, but will bring her to Germany/ Berlin. -

the shift in tone is amazeringing, really, tho, I gotta say
I can hope it's genuine growth, a shift from the bulk "haw haw safe space SJWs" mindset
but I'm not gonna trust it until that's tested a lot more. words and ????s are cheap
(esp since there's still angry posts at times about "slander" or "FUD" or such: 'slander' is laughable in light of past pleroma dev behaviors, and I reserve my "FUD" worries for things I trust, and I don't. 'embrace, envelope, extinguish' may be the plan.)

pleroma advocates after: let me just interject here. much of the bad behavior you see is from fringe GS Instances, ergo pleroma is totally different, and we're only admins, we can't control users. and the codebase is being improved [eighty more pages]
