Why ? #Redundancy is good and who are we to kick someone elses #freedom ? e.g. if I would have to make a choice in this case I would select (1) instead of (2). Why? the open registration in (2) is a potential #spam issue. If your reason is that more people see it, users can subscribe to several groups and would get the message posted in any of those 2. The only "problem" would be when they write a dent and for that there is the Autocomplete plugin.
