To the #YouTube issue, if you still need content from there, I'd say, don't switch it off completely just yet: you can obtain the data from them, but not by their means of ads and nonfree javascript.
#youtube-dl works wonders if you plan to keep the video afterwards, and I wrote a script that combines #mpv and #tor to enable you to stream a video anonymously. Couple that with a search engine like #searx that scrapes results from YouTube itself, and you never ever have to land on that site again.
But I guess that, on a moral plane, the right thing to do really is to ditch YouTube content forever. . -

If your #Linux distribution is having poor sound performance (means a lot stuttering) maybe #pulseaudio is installed. This was here the case: I tried to playback a 340p video from #youtube and had bad stuttering in sound. When I switched to #ALSA the hickups were simply away. So I just uninstalled it as no other program seems to want it and my system now performs very well. It is btw. a #R51 #Thinkpad with 1.7 GHz and 750 MB RAM ... So not the latest technology. ;-)

The WORST. No, maybe not worst. But the nastiest, most insidious, thing I experience on the web must be sites that require javascript to _fully_ load. Not just "you need javascript". But "here you go, all the HTML elements you need, table layout and whatnot - but most of them are PLACEHOLDERS". Wtf?!
This happens on multiple sites where there is a long list of elements that need rendering or hotlinking. If we would do this on !GNUsocial, we'd maybe have the first 2-3 conversations in your home timeline filled out. Then grey boxes. And these boxes would require javascript to load, and for you to navigate to the next page etc. etc.
This phenomenon appears to be present on evil sites like #YouTube (some images load, the rest are left for dead) and #Facebook (you get the table structure, but only a very bad image representation of fake text in the center column). -
