got a speed run world record and I’m not proud of the category: The Sims 2 social worker%
Wednesday, 29-Dec-21 03:20:17 UTC from web-
@scribus If you have the discs, yes. If not, there are no legal ways to get it digitally at ALL anymore. EA took it off of Origin because they were no longer supporting it and only previous owners can download it. For a while there was a product code you could put in to trigger a download but I think k it’s been taken off now.
-
@zeldatra Damn. It seems that if I can source a pre-2012 disc for Sims 3 (2009 release) I can play without Origin, but I don't know if the expansions will just put me back in the same place :-/
-
@scribus I have the Steam version of The Sims 3 with all the expansions that didn’t require Origin. Ben a while since I’ve played it though so I dunno if they changed the requirements.

Petition to classify vaporware as a cryptid
Monday, 27-Dec-21 18:54:04 UTC from web-
@scribus I'd imagine more a creature that affects people/corporations to become greedy with ambitions that results in vaporware. I imagine a millipede and snake hybrid (tail end rattle snake, body millipede, head snake with fangs) with large bug antennae with floofy balls at the ends. The cryptid uses the floofy balls to distract the victim and hide its hideous body and then bits the victim at the back of the head. The fangs inject some kind of venom that causes the feature creep/greed, which itself causes headaches and frustration. That is the nourishment it needs to asexually reproduce itself and affect others in the company.
-
@adiwan That's pretty brutal
-
@scribus As any good cryptid should be. A hideous creepy crawler that "explains" a bad thing in life and that multiplies itself by inflicting more of the bad thing.

I'm surprised Equestria Daily is still kicking after all these years

Enjoyed s4 of Aggretsuko.
Monday, 20-Dec-21 06:37:40 UTC from web-
@scribus I perceived the season more on the meh side. As much I appreciate the layoff narrative and commentary I think that the season was a little bit all over the place. The aftermath of the idol career was extremely side-lined and Retsuko's relationship plot with Haida was weirdly piecemealed. The rest was fine.
-
@adiwan Yeah, it wasn't the best season, but it helped pull me out of my funk for a while. I agree it felt scattered, like they were told this would be the last and they needed to cram two seasons into one. By the end I almost missed having a job, but that's probably just the two++ years of isolation talking, heh

Pro tip: the cashiers at grocery stores just sell the items, they don’t necessarily know how to use them. If you don’t even know what the hell you’re buying, you probably don’t need it.

@zeldatra Man my buddy works in a hardware store, some of the inane customer questions he fields.... Whoo!!
-
@scribus you can always tell when someone’s building their first pipe bomb. Amateurs…
-
@zeldatra Yeah, I guess kludging an inappropriate connector into your gas barbecue could be an (accidental) first bomb build... lol

Dangit, the tail end of this batch of cookies started separating while I was baking the first half
Wednesday, 15-Dec-21 05:18:39 UTC from web-
@scribus I have the same feeling about oven-baked potato fries where 1/3 is about to get turned into charcoal, 1/3 is good, and the last 1/3 is barely done and the opposite of crispy.

It's not that Germany has also its fair share of dumbass politicians *sigh*
Wednesday, 08-Dec-21 21:26:34 UTC from web-
@adiwan Yeah, how's this Merkel handover going?
-
@scribus I'm not enthused. I wasn't happy with Merkel, at least she tried not to F-up everything. I'm not seeing that the replacement is going to be remotely good. Christian Democrats are here the right wing conservatives, and don't share much with my political ideology. I'm more left-leaning and a Pirate Party voter. At least I can say that I didn't vote for the dumbasses that are in power.

Dramatically redrawing voting district borders after every election is insane.
Wednesday, 08-Dec-21 13:02:51 UTC from web-
@adiwan That’s the America we’re about to be living in because one particular party spent most of the 2010s building the ultimate gerrymanders, only to have it completely fall apart when the suburbs turned on them. The new legislative maps for the decade are going to have very few competitive districts - you stay on your side, I’ll stay on mine, etc.
-
@zeldatra Politicians choosing voters instead of the right way around
-
@zeldatra For a country that celebrates freedom it's so sad that it kicks an essential pillar of democracy, that can give a lot of freedoms, to the ground because a minority is power-hungry and restricts these freedoms for their own gain.

Winter cycling is not as bad as I thought. In Summer I sweat excessively after I come home cycling. It's not the case on colder days, or it is less severe. Only the cold air is hard on my lungs but wearing a mask delays the problems a bit as I re-inhale warmer air.
Tuesday, 07-Dec-21 08:16:14 UTC from web-
@adiwan As for the sweat, I found that a small spray bottle of Witch Hazel is handy for freshing up
-
@scribus I tried some anti-transpiration sprays and they mostly fail. Also I would need to cover my whole body with that stuff and it ain't worth it. Luckily I'm not a "stinker" and it gets all back to normal after half an hour.

“I have my PRINCIPLES,” I say to my mother when she asks why I haven’t made six figures on NFTs like the 19 year old crypto artist who lives down the street
Saturday, 04-Dec-21 00:54:45 UTC from web-
@zeldatra I should get in on that. Any time I get involved, the market crashes... lol
-
@scribus I wouldn’t. The whole thing’s a pyramid scheme. I’ve looked into it. Forgetting the environmental impact - my only personal qualm atm, though apparently that’ll change soon - something like 90% of NFT sales are back-and-forth transactions and the remaining 10% only profit if they’re the original seller. AFAIK very few profit from investment.
-
@zeldatra Cool, good news, I'm lazy anyway haha

I cannot believe that I am still STUPID USELESS IDIOTIC MORON FAILSOME enough to ever think that it's going to take me anything less than TWO GODROTTEN HOURS to accomplish a TEN! MILE!! DRIVE!!!

@scribus kinda batcaveed how Los Angeles is simultaneously not a place to be walking around like New York, but ALSO has traffic as bad as New York
-
@zeldatra My town's got about three places to cross its titular river. One is a freeway, another turned out to be closed with no warning, and the third had some wantwit who managed to cause an ambulance-worthy crash at a mere 10-15 MPH.
-
@scribus more or less why getting to Maryland from here is such a hassle despite the town literally being on the state line. Should take five minutes. Ends up taking an hour and a half because there are only two bridges across the Potomac.

If I hit the Lotto, I want to commission a house built to a scale that makes me feel 5 again. And a regular-sized copy next door. With a doghouse on the same floorplan.

If I had to guess, I would wager that Fiverr made their webpage with high schoolers hired off of Craigslist. I haven't seen an interface this godrotten awful since I tried using Gmail. Why does nobody have any clue how people use computers, when we all use them all day every day??
Tuesday, 30-Nov-21 02:53:20 UTC from web-
@scribus This is exactly how I feel about the newest version of Flash, they redesigned the interface for the first time in like twenty years and it feels like it was designed by a guy who’s never used Flash before
-
@zeldatra How are we living in the Year of The Woz 71 and Netflix still needs to be told EVERY EPISODE to turn on the godrotten subtitles?

I drove about 1200km (745 miles) this weekend. I visited my grandparents and picked up my mother back home. I drove most of the time 150km/h (93 mph) and needed only 5 hours for each direction. I'm somewhat exhausted.
Sunday, 28-Nov-21 17:06:36 UTC from web -
Thought I was getting pulled over today on my drive home from a friend’s house. Pulled to the side, he sped right past me. Wherever he was going, every single cop in the county was also going because I saw about twenty squad cars all heading in the same direction at various points during the drive.
Monday, 29-Nov-21 01:57:07 UTC from web-
@zeldatra Yeah that's not a "check the news" moment
-
@scribus that's the thing about whenever i see something like this, i can never find anything about it on local news because i live in the DC-Baltimore media market, so, anything that happens here is immediately overshadowed by two different mass shootings

Well, I finally got desperate enough to launch a Fiverr page https://www.fiverr.com/jlbesq/read-and-record-voiceover if anybody needs/wants my voice for something, or knows someone who does.

Also a friend and I have been trying to write a script for a live-action comedy film centering around a guy who spends years undercover in a New York crime family, it’s set in the 2020s, and I watching this while thinking about that made me think about how there aren’t that many mafia films set in the modern day, it’s all about the 70s and 80s and stuff, The Sopranos is probably as modern as it gets. Would be interesting to explore how the mob operates in the internet age and in a post-9/11 world. Frank Cali was assassinated by a QAnon supporter. That’s insane. The boss of the Gambino crime family, who ran the show for years, got taken out by some guy who thought Trump wanted him to because he was told so on 4Chan. Not gonna see that kiwi in Goodfellas.

@zeldatra Twins?
-
@scribus Had to have the police take a guy home because he was incredibly drunk, was just eating deli meat that he took off the shelves, and then fell asleep underneath a bench in the store. Problem is he lived really close by, so after the cops left he just… walked back over here and was back in literally half an hour later.

@zeldatra ...wow

actively depressed about the Kenosha outcome
Saturday, 20-Nov-21 16:46:32 UTC from web-
@scribus I don’t have much else to add that others have already said better, but if I were a gun advocate (well, more than I already am) I’d be absolutely furious that the kid wasn’t locked up on at least the gun charge. Taking an illegal gun to a protest across state lines and then killing three guys with legally acquired guns really undercuts a lot of pro-gun arguments you usually hear.

@zeldatra *that others haven’t, dammit

Lubing my bike chains was a success. Cycling feels a little bit more smoother now. I think I have a little bit less resistance so I could cycle with one higher gear than usual with the same force. Maybe my brain tricks me thinking that. At least the gunk is scrubbed off. I wonder why there are no more bike chain covers that attempt to fully enclose the chain.
Tuesday, 09-Nov-21 08:29:27 UTC from web-
@adiwan I think stuff like that and tire fenders fell out of favor due to so-called "weight weenies" but I know less than Jon Snow so.... :p
-
@scribus Tire fenders are practically standard here as well as half-enclosed chain guards. Also a rack is basically standard, except for mountain and racing bikes. I just looked up and I found some after-market fully-enclosed chain guards. Only "Holland bikes" have the fully-enclosed bike chain guard out of the box. I guess I never put that much attention to that feature.

@scribus Agree! I have also something to add: When grocery shopping I hate when the cashier asks me if I have their app or any member cards.

context to my earlier post: i was racially profiled on my way home from work today because i'm brown and have a beard so a cop literally followed me from my store across town to another store because he thought i was doing a terrorism. literally was following me until I parked. saw me get out of my car, THEN made a u-turn and left the parking lot.

Got a note from a Republican running for office in my district claiming to want me to reach out to chat with him about his platform. Did just that, because his platform was appleing insane and would be more at-home in Nazi Germany. Am eagerly awaiting the response I am totally going to get
Thursday, 28-Oct-21 05:37:37 UTC from web-
@zeldatra That is outright ghastly and entirely un-shocking. Have they started saying that 1/6 was "just a little riot" like MTG?
-
@scribus This is more or less the last time in probably a while that Republicans have a shot at winning a statewide election in Virginia, historically we’ve always voted against the incumbent party no matter what but that anti-White House sentiment, while not totally gone (Biden won the state by ten points but polling shows the race as a toss-up) is kind of diminishing (we used to see swings of like twenty points, now it’s closer to five) and by 2025 it’ll probably be gone entirely, so this entire campaign has just been a big last-ditch effort to maybe hold Richmond one last time. Nothing is too low if you’re going out anyway.
-
@scribus Glenn Youngkin for his part has tried to distance himself from Trump and January 6th mostly because he can’t afford for the DC suburbs to turn out against him and that’s exactly what they’ll do if they think he’s too much like Trump.
