  1. @northernnarwhal It is not my statement, it is my deduction. If games like CoD did not sell well they would stop making it and I would cheer because I do not like those games. And I have not cheered yet !

  2. @northernnarwhal From neither a gamer's perspective nor a marketing perspective is that a good question. Perhaps for a developer it is though, but I am not one of them. The question that matters to gamers is "Is it fun". The question that matters for artists is "is this my vision". And the question for the publisher is "will this sell well ?". John Romero made my point rather well with all that Daikatana nonsense in 2000.

  3. @mrmattimation But can YOU argue with game sales ?

  4. @northernnarwhal One man's Destiny is another man's Euro Truck Simulator. Point being that oppinions differ a LOT on those topics.

  5. @northernnarwhal And that is the way graphic fidelity is important. Also why I would prefer to have the bar on a considerably high than a considererable low, since I would probably have more time to properly enjoy them. Also it is better to have something great than to have the community mod in so much crap you'll eventually feel that the community did more for the game than the original dev team did

  6. @mushi *tries to find it for jokes & giggles on the Dutch market* ... WOW ... you are not kidding

  7. @northernnarwhal While we are on pies. Allow me to take away pieces of the pie untill there is nothing left but the bare essentials and then I'll try to sell it to you while claiming it for only to be second best next to a fully fledged wedding cake. While in reality it is nothing but the bottom part of a cheesecake with jam smeared all over it. That does not fly ! Just like how you would not be able to sell GTA5 on GTA 3's graphic fidelity. Now to put that into context, you need to have the proper graphical fidelity to actualy convey what you want to do in the game. If you had a racing game that only had 15 FPS you would not be able to play it very well. As for games with a stronger graphical component compared to gameplay or story, pretty much all Simulator games.

  8. @scribus Oh, I really liked the graphical explanation on the evaporating planet :) ( mainly before the "what if you were standing on that planet" explanation though )

  9. @northernnarwhal No I do not, Maybe because I am either oblivious to it, or that is not what I meant. I said that there is a magic mixture of graphic fidelity, story, and gameplay, both of which enable eachother. Yet one factor is always the strongest ( or appears the strongest ). We could also twist the whole debate around by asking the question "If graphic fidelity was not important, then why are there so many Minecraft/Skyrim mods that make it look photorealistic ?"

  10. @northernnarwhal Destiny primarily stands on its gameplay, but still needs both graphic fidelity and story to survive. Xenoblade on the Wii would also starve an infancy death if it were not for gameplay and graphic fidelity. As such I am not sure what the magic mixture actually is. But I am sure that if you were to look at the System Requirements for The Witcher 3 and the explanation of "why so high system requirements" you perhaps could see it. Also keeping in mind Simulator games and Elite : Dangerous and Star Citizen. Also I think that Tribes:Ascend could deserve a honourable mention. The gameplay of which would not even be possible to such an extent if not for graphic fidelity of its kind

  11. @spots I dare you to play Dwarf Fortress XD

Sunday, 25-Jan-15 18:15:02 UTC from web in context
  12. @northernnarwhal Agreed. There are games that stand on their story, games that stand on their gameplay, and games that stand on their visuals. ... Speaking about "that's a game and not somehting like a film", I should probably do the same as http://www.nerfnow.com/comic/628 soonish.

  13. @northernnarwhal In the case of Destiny, yes you would be right. But if the game would look worse than the story... I do not think so many people would still play it

Sunday, 25-Jan-15 18:06:15 UTC from web in context
  14. @northernnarwhal How about Elite : Dangerous and others of it's kind ? Star Citizen spings to mind. Although technically they would fall under the same category as Minecraft in the "go out there and create your own adventure !" ( in which the story can be either very good, or very bad, depending on what you make of it ) but since I'd really much prefer to see what the heck that weird thing about 100 metres ahead of me while playing Euro Truck Simulator for a change, and my rig is fully loaded and weighing over 20 Tons, I would really prefer for it to be identifyable before I squish right over a Fiat Panda with just 1 occupant who was born in 1944. Point is, to each their own. Heck there are a lot of people who play Destiny, and Story-wise that game is about as rich as an orphan is nutricious ( as in : it takes a rather strange person to claim so ) especially seen as that the game points to an out of game reference book for every scrap of lore

  15. @mrmattimation There is nothing wrong with any resolution in my book. However when your old man decides to jump the 4K-fence and you start to notice the imput lag on this new 4K TV. That is where the problems start in my book. Upscaling imput signals takes time.

  16. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUeeh8eMXlg ... No need to listen to the audio feed. Some guy at LAN-fest was having this weird monitor with a resolution of 2880 by 900, which looks nifty enough... However I do not think I would "want" one due to primarily a size versus comfort issue... I guess it falls into the same category as 7.1 Dolby Surroundsound, its awesome if you have a friend whom has it, you yourself in your cramped appartment ? not so much

Sunday, 25-Jan-15 17:30:37 UTC from web
  17. @mrmattimation That would be enough for some really weird angle 1080X370370370 pixel surround-monitor XD ... If it were real I'd want to play some games on that XD ( Or 2160X185185185, still enough to make it a UHD/4K wide surround-monitor )

Sunday, 25-Jan-15 17:25:18 UTC from web in context
  18. @mrmattimation That is like saying that the eye can not see beyond 24 frames per second. Do you have any idea how weird life would look in only 24 frames per second ? Ahwell, that is besides the point. My point is ( and was ) that if you are going to sell a product as 4K it better be 4K, and not some marketing mumbo jumbo to make it sell better...

Sunday, 25-Jan-15 17:20:09 UTC from web in context
  19. @awesam17 Short answer, yes. Long answer : not really, let me explain. Back when RAM was extremely small we went from 1 Byte to 2, to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048. To keep it managable for the mouth they started to call it Kilobytes ( 1 Kilobyte = 1024 Bytes ) ... So 4K monitors ( 4 Kilopixels ) are 4096 actual pixels on the horizontal axis. Technically anyway. Since The Standard of 4K is 4096X2160. However the average consumer does not know this and will be sold a TV/Monitor with a ???x2160 resolution following the popular 16:9 aspect ratio for consumer TV's/monitors ( http://pny.lv/b2jg ... this is aspect ratio ) meaning 3840X2160. Which is not actually 4K at all. But it all boils down to "more pixels in a monitor" anyway. No reason to fight over it, although it will not stop average consumers to throw a tantrum once they find out I'd reckon

  21. So get this, a guy I know whom is constantly bashing on about technology just went on another spree pretty much splurting out "What about this 4K nonsense ! I just want to be able to use my XboX to play games. I do not care about 4K, I just want to play my games without them looking horrible !". Last week he was ranting about how in his Call of Duty game ( quote ) "the pixel density seems to go up and down depending on the level" ( he is right you know, it does ) ... So I felt compelled to ask wether he knows what 4K actually is. It resulted in me smiling and facepalming at the same time. As if my facial muscles betrayed me telling me "Just facepalm and smile it off buddy... ... smile it off..."

  22. @mushi ... Getting used to something like is well beyond the abilities for normal humans I'm afraid. I hope they stopped 3+ hours later though

Sunday, 25-Jan-15 16:31:25 UTC from web in context
  23. @mushi Hehe, oh wow. I hope your problems will resolve themselves before some sort of home-owner-association throws in a couple of demands. ... If things like that can even happen in Brazil

  24. @mushi You're a chemist, or chemistry major ( right ? ) I am pretty sure you could think of some proper concoctions. Cyanide comes to mind XD. Naw ofcourse I am kidding.

  29. @critialcloudkicker slice and dice and wok, then add... Don't want you to burn anything now... I am assuming this was obvious and this is probably a waste of a good dash :)

  30. @bakarainbowdash Back to soup... You can pretty much add anything to canned soup, especially if you are trying to start to learn how to cook. If you did not make it terrible you did a good job. Paprica or Carrots are simple things to try to add, just slice and dice and add... Though you could decide to throw them in a wokpan to give them a crunchy bite beforehand
