If my laptop was clicking as though the HDD was going bad 6 days ago, and it stopped clicking and is still running now, does that mean I'm safe? Would the drive have failed by now, or is it still possible it will fail? I'm wondering if the click might not have been a fan that got un-gunked.

@cinnamonswirl Is that usually accurate? I'm using a program called PassMark to run an extended Disk Self Test and it notes the DST isn't always relaible. Is SpeedFan better?

@pony Speedfan makes the raw health stats of the drive clearly visible to you. The drives themselves define where their borderlines are, so it can flag up if they're "OK" or "FAIL" for you. You can also see how close they're getting. It will also perform an "Online analysis", where it will check your stats against the average stats of other users of the same model of drive.

@sc True. The sad thing is that I actually really liked the term alicorn originally before I knew that it wasn't actually a "new" word, but an old one that didn't mean what people used it to mean. If it weren't already in-use, I'd like "alicorn" a lot more as a word for winged unicorns.

@mrmattimation Animation students generally spend a LOT of time in labs, based on my experience. Just be aware you might (continue to) not have a social life if you study in that field.

even though I remember something mentioning how it's bad writing to repeatedly refer to someone indirectly like that and that it's better to just refer to them by name. I think it was on FIMFiction's writing guide

@thewaifutyphoon I think the general rule is that it shouldn't slow the reader down or make the narrative feel awkward.

@pony well that and like, we already know she's a purple unicorn/alicorn/whatever. It's just weird and repetitive mentioning it over and over.

@thewaifutyphoon Yeah. I agree to a certain extent. As a fan of the show, I'm visually triggered by "purple pony," "mauve mare," or "lavender librarian," so that's actually nice, but there's a time and a place for it, usually somewhere at the beginning of a scene or when it's an especially descriptive part meant to create an image for the reader.
