@purplephish20 Oh yeah, it's not _bad_. It's just comparatively mediocre (in gameplay; like I said, the story's aged much better) when modern games have already learned from everything it did well.

@bitshift I wouldn't really say it's mediocre, per se. Its age definitely shows, and it doesn't do anything special by today's standards, though it's still a pretty good game. I blast through it from time to time, I can only really think of one or two parts that bug me.

@luckyjack There's a manga of it, as well as an anime, but the series originally started as a visual novel-type thing. The latter two are already complete, and the manga is about... I think a bit over half-done in English? Not entirely sure on that part.

@hakupony yup! ^^ it seems to have something to do with loosing one's cool, like rustled jimmies, but more awkard I suppose. There are lots of references to it on youtube though I've never looked up the source.

@carcino !vgp Instead of the typical "Buck yeah, American war hero!" storyline of most MMS games, Spec Ops takes the "War is hell" approach and really drives it home. || You are sent on what initially seems like a rescue mission, only to find yourself caught in an active war zone with no idea which side (if either) is "the bad guys", and having to defend yourself against both. || There are cutscenes -- perhaps a few more than strictly necessary -- to drive the story forward, but most of the story is told through in-game chatter between yourself and your teammates. || The game also allows you to make choices (with consequences) through the gameplay, rather than through any RPG-style dialogue. "Do I shoot this guy, or let him walk away?"; "Do I use this rocket launcher to clear the room of hostiles, or do I try to find another way around?"; "Do I go in guns blazing? oops, I just gunned down a civilian who was running for cover."
