@sc True. The sad thing is that I actually really liked the term alicorn originally before I knew that it wasn't actually a "new" word, but an old one that didn't mean what people used it to mean. If it weren't already in-use, I'd like "alicorn" a lot more as a word for winged unicorns.

@sc the fandom's use of alicorn just felt ignorant to me ever since then. Originally I thought it was perfect because "ali" means wings in italian.

@mrmattimation Animation students generally spend a LOT of time in labs, based on my experience. Just be aware you might (continue to) not have a social life if you study in that field.

even though I remember something mentioning how it's bad writing to repeatedly refer to someone indirectly like that and that it's better to just refer to them by name. I think it was on FIMFiction's writing guide

@thewaifutyphoon I think the general rule is that it shouldn't slow the reader down or make the narrative feel awkward.

@pony well that and like, we already know she's a purple unicorn/alicorn/whatever. It's just weird and repetitive mentioning it over and over.

@thewaifutyphoon Yeah. I agree to a certain extent. As a fan of the show, I'm visually triggered by "purple pony," "mauve mare," or "lavender librarian," so that's actually nice, but there's a time and a place for it, usually somewhere at the beginning of a scene or when it's an especially descriptive part meant to create an image for the reader.

@snowcone Yeah. Normal books, though, have the big advantage of starting from a place that the target audience will understand, where encyclopedias and articles don't exactly, or else they dumb things down too much for the serious learner.

@snowcone oh neato. I think I get the general idea at least. I wish I still had my book on string theory. It taught me the theory of relativity and blew my mind, but then I never finished it before it got lost :(

Creationism? That's obviously true. I recall a related discussion we had here well over a year ago, I think. It involved whether or not the universe only appears orderly by chance or actually does have persistent order. I was surprised to see that many believed order was only by chance, or, in other words, that the universe is in its current state indefinitely due to infinite possibility, and that, though maybe unlikely, the laws of universe could cease to work at any moment.

My counterpoint was that, in a universe with infinite possiblities, there must be infinite possible states that include some variety of permanent, meaningful order, and to assume that ours is not one of those states goes against the fact that we'll continue existing in this current state 1 second from now, and 1 second from then, etc., and that what appears to be the record of the past confirms that we have existed like this for a very long time.
