Boris are another band who have veered into territory that could be considered "metal" on some of their records, but categorizing them in general is kind of impossible because of how much their sound has changed over the years.

@nerthos I'd say The Dillinger Escape Plan are one of my favourites too cause I still love their music, but I wouldn't necessarily consider it metal so much as I'd say it's hardcore punk music that takes cues from metal music, same with guys like Converge and Protest the Hero.

@nerthos Off the top of my head some of my favourite metal bands are Death, Maudlin of the Well, Mastodon, Sunn O))), Isis (very unfortunate name, this band https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isis_(band)), Altar of Plagues, Deafheaven and Nails

@nerthos Yeah, I'm way more into 90s metal too, as well as a handful of 00s/10s metal bands.

@nerthos I was into them back in grade school when I went through a 70s/80s metal kick, but these days I'm not as into them. I still think Hallowed Be Thy Name is a pretty rad song though.

@ii I've seen this word get thrown around a lot by internet conservatives, judging from context my read on it is it's their flavour-of-the-week pejorative for anyone who holds progressive or inclusive beliefs.

@tiffany Remember: As cliche as it is, context is crucial when critiquing media. A comparable database of tropes and archetypes will identify storytelling beats but won't actually articulate any effective use of craft or storytelling tools outside of it. It's functionally the same as pointing out that two characters from different series both wore red shirts at some point.

@tiffany I've fallen into using this in the past, but it's not really meaningful as actual criticism because it divorces both works from their respective contexts
