@mrmattimation It's kinda sad to imagine that if someone like Jimi Hendrix was around today his producer would probably insist on quantizing the final mixes of his records in a DAW (since if you have a trained ear and go back and listen to his stuff you can actually hear parts not in perfect time), but it would totally sterilize the rawness of a lot of his music. Like, I'm not against digital production (and hell, I actually generally prefer it considering how arduous and expensive recording analog can be, not to mention the rate at which lots of analog recording equipment can break down) but as the expression goes it's futile to put lipstick on a pig. Most people can't even notice the difference between analog and digital, and will always veer towards art they simply find compelling for whatever reason.

@mushi That's why I actually prefer when movies don't go out of their way to explain their science to me, because then I can just assume whatever is happening is a facet of the laws of physics within that film's universe.

@stawllion Yeah, thankfully on the other hand it's given me a greater appreciation for a lot of stuff too, having "trained ear" (using that term loosely here) means I can get a lot of enjoyment out of just hearing something that's been well engineered. It's certainly reminded me why I've gotten so into vinyl records too, specifically for analog recorded albums (since there generally isn't actually much of a difference between vinyl and high quality digital if the music itself was recorded, mixed, and mastered on digital).

Had a dream I was refereeing a fight between Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao. In a junkyard. The ring was a worn-out old mattress, and the fighters couldn't agree on which torn-up rusted-springs-poking-through side was the best one. Neither of them got around to throwing a punch because of the crummy setup. Then suddenly I was driving along the freeway with this lady I've been seeing and my parents texted me to pick up a birthday card for one of my cousins, so we stopped at this store that was like a two-storey Costco / 99 Cents Only mashup. And then the rain woke me up thinking that I was going to be late for work because my roommate was already in the shower.
