He just always had good-paying careers handed to him. Drops out of high school? Grandad's friend has a company with an opening. Join the military? Bam, assignment assigned! Get married? Father-in-law has an "in" at the old factory. Lifelong mango with a pension, man. And for a dropout, to boot.
