There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

@ceruleanspark I will try to start saying GNU/Linux more often, but it's just so hard and as uncatchy as OS/2...

@omni They're Stallmans words, not mine. This particular speech is kind of a joke in certain circles.

@ceruleanspark No. That's it. The cool name, that is. We worked very hard on creating a name that would appeal to the majority of people, and it certainly paid off: thousands of people are using linux just to be able to say "OS/2? Hah. I've got Linux. What a cool name". 386BSD made the mistake of putting a lot of numbers and weird abbreviations into the name, and is scaring away a lot of people just because it sounds too technical. ~Linus Torvalds (Must say though, in ways I agree with Stallman, the issue is, it's just hard to pronounce and remember =/)

@omni lol the numbers were certainly 386BSD's cheif mistake, not all the licensed code being used against it's terms and the following lawsuits surrounding it :P

@omni What about OS/2 Warp? It has "Warp" in the name! "Warp" is a cool word! Warp warp warp warp warp...

@omni I as gnulinux quickly, so people who understand will understand and those who aren't mushy-brained can ask once and understand and the people who are can just nod and continue listening; althought it is incorrect (not saying you aren't aware ;)) to say GNU Linux, that implies Linux is a product of the GNU Project, which it is not, hence the slash, just slashes aren't nice to say out loud and like I said, people will understand what you implied =D
