I just want to take this time to point out that I'm not experiencing the issue @nerthos seems to have- middle-clicking is properly opening everything in a new tab and not trying to also open it in the active tab. @ceruleanspark
Friday, 04-May-12 15:57:23 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel @ceruleanspark Likewise. Everything seems to be a-OK here (on Windows 7 64-bit/Firefox 13).
Friday, 04-May-12 16:00:18 UTC from web-
@bitshift They have 13 now? Geez, I'm now officially ten versions behind.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:01:30 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Any particular reason why? I'm pretty sure they already stopped updates for 3.x, now that 10.x is the new long-term stable release.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:02:58 UTC from web-
@bitshift Because clicking the update button and waiting for an update to download and install on my connection haha yeah right also I'm too lazy and some of my addons only work with 3.6 apparently?
Friday, 04-May-12 16:04:55 UTC from web-
@redenchilada The addons that don't work have either become part of firefox or have been replaced with new addons that do work.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:06:15 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel That doesn't nullify the laziness aspect.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:07:38 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I would be concerned about security with such an old version.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:09:04 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel You'd think so, but somehow I haven't had any security issues with my old outdated version. (Except from dA for a little bit, which compelled me to finally install AdBlock lololol.)
Friday, 04-May-12 16:10:19 UTC from web -
@toksyuryel 3.6 was the last good one.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:10:48 UTC from web-
@nerthos I use Pentadactyl, any changes firefox makes to the default UI go completely unnoticed by me; all that matters is features, bugfixes (especially security fixes), and web standards support.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:12:33 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel Pentadactyl?
Friday, 04-May-12 16:13:23 UTC from web-
@bitshift It is an addon that lets you operate Firefox like vim http://5digits.org/pentadactyl/index
Friday, 04-May-12 16:14:23 UTC from web -
@bitshift It's like one of those total conversion mods some games have.

@toksyuryel Oh hey, this looks interesting. I did try Vimperator way back when, but it didn't really take. This looks a lot better, though.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:15:01 UTC from web-
@bitshift It's a fork of vimperator with all of the active developers.

@toksyuryel Plus, I have 7 on my flash drive and I don't care for the interface. (It also seems a lot slower, but that might be the flash drive's fault.)
Friday, 04-May-12 16:08:17 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Yeah, it's the flash drive's fault. Firefox Portable can be orders of magnitude slower than a regular install if you're not lucky enough to have a decently speedy drive.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:09:34 UTC from web-
@bitshift I might consider moving it onto my school drive. But then I'm dealing with networked data transfer speeds... D:
Friday, 04-May-12 16:13:44 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Eeuch. I guess you just can't win there. :(

@redenchilada If they only work with a version which is now multiple years old, that doesn't say anything especially good to me about their developers. As for the updating, 4 (or maybe 5) and up automatically fetch the new version in the background, so you just click "upgrade" and are done with it. And from either 13 on, the default option is to have it automatically upgrade itself once the new version's been fetched, so that would take care of the laziness part of what you said. :)
Friday, 04-May-12 16:08:30 UTC from web-
@bitshift But that involves CLICKING A BUTTON. I'm too LAZY to CLICK A BUTTON.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:09:26 UTC from web-
@redenchilada As I said, in 13 the default switches to automatically doing that bit (though the option is still there to go back to manual), so you wouldn't even have to click a button.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:10:36 UTC from web-
@bitshift But I'd have to install 13 first. And what does that involve? CLICKING A BUTTON.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:11:02 UTC from web-
@redenchilada YOU ARE TERRIBLE.

@bitshift Also, multiple years old? Wtf, I download FF3 last February.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:15:38 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Firefox 3.6 released on January 21, 2010. 3.6.x releases have only been minor bug/security fixes, so yes, multiple years old at this point, even if you count from the last major 3.x update. If you count from 3.x itself, it's over 4 years.

@redenchilada 13 is still a development version. The most recent stable release is 12.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:02:59 UTC from web -
@redenchilada Well, only 9 for now. This is the beta update stream, since that's a good mix of stable/shiny for me.

@rotation Oh. I didn't know this.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:19:45 UTC from web -
@rotation Still, the fact that they went with one version for three years, then came out with ten new versions in _one_ year... doesn't sit right with me.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:20:24 UTC from web-
@redenchilada They've been doing releases at the same pace and with the same amount of content in them, all that's changed is how they number them. It could technically still be called Firefox 4 as the internals have not changed significantly since then.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:23:00 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I wonder why they _don't_ just call it FF4 then.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:24:31 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Because chrome is on version 10+
-
@redenchilada Marketing and because Chrome was doing it.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:25:16 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel Eh, still seems silly. When I see something increase its numbers like that, my impression is "geez will they even support this before releasing their new version"
Friday, 04-May-12 16:27:23 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Many agree it's silly but Mozilla isn't budging on their position so we're just gonna have to live with it.

@redenchilada The entire point of it is a rapid release cycle, so features more quickly go from coding to being ready for public consumption. Previously, it could be months and months between them finishing a feature and it ever even reaching general public consumption. I'm not so sure doing full version number bumps for the comparatively more minor updates is all that great, but I guess they want people to actually think "new version" rather than "another revision of 4, I'll wait until 5 before I upgrade".
Friday, 04-May-12 16:24:11 UTC from web-
@bitshift But if it _is_ another revision of 4, why isn't it advertised as such?
Friday, 04-May-12 16:25:04 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Because they found, from experience, that people wouldn't upgrade if they perceived it as that, even though it'd be in their best interest to keep up with the current stable version (more support of modern standards, and so on). Not enough "ooh, shiny", I'm guessing.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:26:54 UTC from web -
@redenchilada Also, it is actually more than just a revision of 4, just not as big as I'd have expected would warrant a full major version bump.

@rotation Ew, I bet you use that chrome thing that sends all of your personal data to Google, don't you.

@rotation Ew, don't tell me you use INTERNET EXPLORER. *gag*
Friday, 04-May-12 16:25:24 UTC from web -
@rotation Guessing webkit then
Friday, 04-May-12 16:27:17 UTC from web -
@rotation I'm stumped, then. Unless you use a Mac. But then I'd have to lynch you.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:27:48 UTC from web -
@rotation Opera?
Friday, 04-May-12 16:28:32 UTC from web -
@rotation Ah.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:29:27 UTC from web -
@rotation Never heard of it.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:29:47 UTC from web-
@redenchilada It's Opera
Friday, 04-May-12 16:30:23 UTC from web -
@redenchilada Presto is the rendering engine (since @rotation was responding to a post asking about Webkit, which is an engine), Opera is the browser.
Friday, 04-May-12 16:31:03 UTC from web-
@bitshift Oh. Makes sense then, I guess.
