So last night our DM learned the hard way (despite it having been stated and it also being pretty obvious) that grappling Clerics is a terrible idea. Me, being the grappled by a larger creature than I, simply started to instantly cast Inflict Serious/Moderate/Light wounds in quick succession until it died in horrible death. EAT IT DM, HA >:D

@communistprime In before campaign of entirely telekinetic enemies.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:01:37 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Oh god no. But a lot of them are starting to get reach now, which is awful annoying for my melee cleric >:C
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:04:40 UTC from web-
@communistprime Wind wall. It basically makes you invulnerable to arrows and such.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:08:50 UTC from web-
@nerthos Oh, yeah. I think I can still cast that as a cleric, otherwise our main caster would be able to, haha.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:10:25 UTC from web-
@communistprime Yup, it's a third level spell or something like that. I have it on my paladin.

@communistprime Do clerics have to prepare spells, or is that specifically a wizard thing? #DnDNoob
-
@bitshift Clerics do too, but with the Healing domain I can spontaneously cast a Cure spell from any I have, so most of my prepared are painful or useful spells till I need to heal. I also have the Death domain, so that gives me some nice stuff like Death Knell (though most enemies in this campaign regenerate, so we have to kill them dead) and Animate Dead as domain spells, plus an instant kill supernatural power :D
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:04:18 UTC from web-
@communistprime This sounds like 3.x to me.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:05:56 UTC from web-
@scribus Yeah, we play 3.5 because 4e is...weird. I like 3.5 more, has better storytelling aspects even if the combat can get a little awkward.

@communistprime AD&D 2.0 master race
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:07:58 UTC from web-
@nerthos One of those people who thinks THAC0 is an IQ test one needs to pass in order to be worthy of playing?
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:08:36 UTC from web-
@scribus No, but >3.0 is basically... abstract. A DM can pretty much do whatever he wants without any rule aganist it, and low level characters suck even more than in older versions.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:11:20 UTC from web-
@nerthos Yeah, it's all got its ups and downs. 4.0 is a lot more simple and easy, which is exactly what I hate about it -- if I wanted that kind of gameplay, I'd take up an MMORPG. I think 3.x was mostly a good balance between flexibility and reliable, solid rules. But I came in on the tail end of 2nd, so I'm not as well-versed as I could be there.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:15:04 UTC from web-
@scribus I basically play 2.0 and modifications of it. Tried the new ones too, but I don't like them. A combat oriented system simply lacks sense, if I want to play a combat game I just play one of the 10 ARPGs I have on my computer.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:16:52 UTC from web-
@nerthos Try some of the White Wolf games, I swear their combat system is geared to make players do anything but fight. :p
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:18:17 UTC from web-
@scribus I'll try one
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:18:58 UTC from web-
@nerthos I liked "Werewolf: The Apocalypse," but I'm fond of werewolves in general. EXCEPT FOR TWILIGHT BLUH!! D:<
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:20:04 UTC from web-
@scribus We do not talk about Twilight. Yeah, some of the players on my group have played those, I should bother my DM some day.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:21:10 UTC from web -
@scribus Speaking of werewolves, I've had the biggest urge to play Vampire: The Masquerade lately. Never played it, but my friend talks about it and I've played the Bloodlines game on PC, so it's so interesting. That, and White Wolf makes some pretty neat tabletop stuff.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:21:57 UTC from web-
@communistprime Only played W:TA, so I can't really speak for it, but I do like White Wolf's focus on role play over roll play. (Don't hurt me, it wasn't originally my pun!)
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:24:33 UTC from web-
@scribus Yeah, they've got a real nice system. I've also seen a good roleplay system that can be adapted to custom campaigns, as long as you're willing to stat out what armors and weapons n' such would be like. Called 'The Window', and me and my friend used it to create a sci-fi campaign from scratch, using it for everything from spaceship combat to infantry shielding and weapon strength. Very fun and cool system...too bad we never got our game going :c
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:26:42 UTC from web-
@communistprime Sounds interesting... I've tried and failed so many times to get my own system running, it's almost like "trying and failing to create a pen & paper RPG system" is a hobby of mine. =/ haha
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:28:57 UTC from web-
@scribus Yeah, that always sucks...we worked pretty hard on it (she did more than me, since she was going to be the DM), but it looked like it was gonna be awesome. Here's a link if you wanna check it out. It's simple and awesome. http://www.mimgames.com/window/
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:30:38 UTC from web-
@communistprime Looks well-suited for horror, from the web design. D:
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:31:42 UTC from web-
@scribus It's good for pretty much anything. I'll have to see if I can get access to my friend's notes so I can show you what we did...it was pretty nicely made and almost always explained by hard science (thanks to yours truly :3)

@scribus I had to create two systems. One to teach my cousins and brother how to RP, so it had to be REALLY simple, and another one for a mid XX century mafia game.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:36:10 UTC from web-
@nerthos Wow, mafia. Cool!
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:37:52 UTC from web-
@scribus I have yet to test how well it works. It's has weapon class experience like Fire Emblem, that's what I most like about it. There are no classes, but you can choose a couple talents/abilities when creating the character and gain more when you level up/train
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:39:58 UTC from web-
@nerthos hey, how is this fire emblem like?
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:41:51 UTC from web-
@mushi The weapon class thing works like fire emblem's weapon experience system, where you have to use weapons to raise grades (D, C, B...) to be able to equip higher level ones. That way a character can use a revolver without problems with no experience, but can't use a prototype hi tech pistol.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:44:16 UTC from web-
@nerthos no, i asked how is the game like
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:45:05 UTC from web-
@mushi Strategy RPG, turn based, really fun. Try one.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:45:45 UTC from web-
@nerthos i was looking for a game to play on my DS, and i downloaded a random one, i will try this fire emblem after i beat this one
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:47:28 UTC from web-
@mushi Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. Try to max Shiida's stats. In any stage with a colliseum just choose two or three of your strong characters, and level up the rest.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:48:48 UTC from web-
@nerthos Ew, Shadow Dragon. If you're going to be freely choosing (downloading a ROM implies such), the two GBA ones (three if you're willing to apply a translation patch) are much better. The second DS one looks more promising, but never got an official translation, and the unofficial translation remains unfinished.

@nerthos Never played 2.0, only played 3.5, which seems to be the best for most situations. I don't like a lot of 4e's races and such either.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:08:38 UTC from web-

@nerthos I can imagine. 4e is primarily meant for combat, which is fine and all, but I like some non-combat funstuff in my campaigns too.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:14:52 UTC from web-
@communistprime Yeah, the fun on tabletops is basically working stuff to get advantages outside combat or with the enviorment. Or simply doing crazy stuff to have fun, like hanging a giant golden chicken from the front of a ship.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:18:49 UTC from web-
@nerthos Or trying to throw your gnome wizard in a second story building and accidentally throwing him right into the wall in front of you. Or beating your captors to death with table legs...ahh, good times.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:21:08 UTC from web-
@communistprime Engeneering. Engeneering is the best thing. I got a pair of unique gauntlets enchanted to cast lightning through the weapons or on enemies, and used them to build plasma claws.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:23:17 UTC from web-
@nerthos Wait, we're still talking about Fantasy? I DO love d20 Modern and Future, but I'm a big science and tech nerd too :p
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:24:47 UTC from web-
@communistprime Yes, fantasy. But the concept for plasma is fairly easy, and in that campaign there are a couple of steampunk things, even if they're rare. So I used the gauntlets to power an arc, and made a mage enchant a couple of fans to perpetually spin; since plasma is just oxygen through an electric arc...
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:27:56 UTC from web-
@nerthos Makes sense then. As a cleric my character probably would disdain it somewhat...but as a person, I might make her use ti anyways cuz technology gives me a wingpapayas >_>
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:29:08 UTC from web-
@communistprime That was with a chaotic good paladin of Tempus, since he was named champion by his god in that world, he basically uses anything he can to gain more power, with the ultimate goal of being mighty enough to show the whole plane the glory of his god. I made a steam powered medieval engineering tank too, and I'll build a portable version of a force field projector that was mounted in the holy city of his god before it fell.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:34:18 UTC from web-
@nerthos Nice. I'm a chaotic good cleric at the moment with no deity (as per our campaign, but divine spells still work fine)...but I seem to slowly be drifting towards neutral/evil with the way I'm acting >_>
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:35:46 UTC from web-
@communistprime One of those spheres of influence clerics?
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:37:39 UTC from web-
@nerthos Nah, that's just how the campaign works. Still a cleric in every way, just no deity and the ability to function as if I had one.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:40:32 UTC from web-
@communistprime Oh, custom campaigns. I love those. In the one I play the DM agreed to remove some restrictions due to really high level characters and apply casting restrictions only by attributes.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:42:13 UTC from web-
@nerthos Playing by the book can get boring anyways. This DM is by the book, with exceptions here and there enough to make it fun. Our other DM allows pretty much anything and even gives bonuses for doing cool/outrageous stuff as long as you can explain how you're doing it...and are prepared for the consequences should you fail.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:45:36 UTC from web-
@communistprime That is the best thing to play. When I DM a campaign I remove the armor restrictions and instead set attribute requirements for them, since why can a peasant wear a breastplate, but a wizard with 18 strenght and endurance can't?
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:47:29 UTC from web-
@nerthos Because armor is hard to move in (I would know...god it is) and if you're a wizard with 18 strength you might have put your attributes in the wrong stats xD But yeah, I know what you mean.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:48:32 UTC from web-
@communistprime Yeah, is hard to move in, but after you gained lots of attibute bonuses and stuff, there's no reason why a fighter character cannot tell you how to use one.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:49:45 UTC from web-
@nerthos That's why you'd need to take the feats for proficiency :p As long as the arcane spell failure chance is there though...I mean, I have a suit of replica N7 armor from ME2 and I put it on to try and swordfight my friend. Could barely move in it, not to mention it pinched the hell out of a few joint areas.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:51:20 UTC from web-
@communistprime That means it's not a well designed armor, or it's just not designed for swordfighting. Since it's a shooting game... A good armor shouldn't hurt you, since it should be designed to fit your body.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:53:44 UTC from web-
@nerthos Either way, you're missing the point. Arcane spell failure is there to represent how hard it is to move in stuff like that, especially with a lot of elaborate hand movements some spells need. Otherwise I could see it being reduced or removed with the metamagic feat to remove requirements to moving (can't remember the name of the term). If I were a DM I wouldn't allow it anyways, spellcaster have plenty of AC boosting spells as is, haha. Our spellcaster gets up to 23 AC with me as a Cleric and he's wearing a chain shirt.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:56:10 UTC from web-
@communistprime Yeah, that's a point. still there are special sets of armor made to allow certain types of movements. But yeah, the spell failure is there, if your class is not meant to do something there will be penalties. I had to design a "no class" full plate armor set once, since my paladin inherited an ancient armor that works as a badge of office for his status of protector of a province/kingdom, and since any class could be named champion of the kingdom, it should allow complete movement freedom and excellent protection, since it had a defense stat of 9k, when the best normal warrior armor had 6k. Designing that thing was HELL. And I'm not sure how a blacksmith would be able to actually forge something like that. Oh, and also it had to look classy since the character is really vain.

@communistprime I approve wholeheartedly. Though, the 3.5 power-creep got INSANE towards some of the later manuals.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:08:12 UTC from web-
@scribus Oh yeah, it's currently on a major climb for all of us, but we're also playing a slightly modified campaign with some extra stuff. There's only 4 of us (3 sometimes, as one person tends to drop out here and there for a day), so we end up fighting mobs of enemies with DR and fast-healing. Thankfully I am the tank/healer and our other two that are present are usually damager caster and damage/tank or damage arrows. I just prestiged to a homebrew class, allowed by the DM, so that'll help me get fairly stronger. Clerics get nuts later on anyways, which is why I <3 them.
Thursday, 10-May-12 18:12:56 UTC from web-
@communistprime Clerics are pretty wild, but I've had so much fun with just about every class. Great halfling wizard I did once, a killer (no pun) dwarf barbarian, a human bard who reshaped the entire campaign when he "betrayed" the party to try to save the world... Come to think of it, the real fun was based more on the character than it was on the class. XD

I always end up playing Clerics since no one else wants to (for a reason I'll never understand), and since I've got the healing in the party my characters tend to be somewhat...loud in their opinions of the others, especially when I need to Diplomacy over their political mistakes over and over.
