I actually think Stand Your Ground is a good idea

@oracle ...I don't live in "liberal land."

@oracle ...no?

@oracle Regular Virginia. You know, the one with all the governors who hate abortion.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:25:26 UTC from web -
@oracle In any case I was ashamed of the opinion because the people on this website are very liberal, not because of the people in my town. (Though to be fair we are less conservative than the rest of the state.)]
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:27:53 UTC from web -
@oracle I don't know what that is.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:29:32 UTC from web -
@mrmattimation Seems alright to me. I don't know why liberals would be opposed to it just because they're liberal.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:31:11 UTC from web-
@pony I'm a liberal and I think I sound dumb when I say it.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:32:04 UTC from web-
@mrmattimation I don't get why liberals are supposed to want stricter gun laws either.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:35:17 UTC from web-
@pony Well, there are examples all around that gun control really does help. In Britain, guns are super restricted, and they have a much lower rate of gun crime than we do.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:39:11 UTC from web-
@mrmattimation I just don't get why that reasoning should be considered liberal.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:54:47 UTC from web-
@pony I thought you didn't get why we believe gun control is a good thing
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:55:26 UTC from web-
@mrmattimation I think control is being taken to an unconstitutional and unwise extreme, but that wasn't my original point. I was only commenting on how I don't get why liberals are stereotyped as wanting stricter gun laws.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:00:35 UTC from web-
@pony It's not a stereotype if it's true. Many liberals, myself included, do in fact believe that strict gun control is needed.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:03:58 UTC from web-
@mrmattimation I've noticed that as well. I don't deny the correlation. Stereotypes can be true. It still leaves me wondering why the correlation.

@pony @oracle In any case, that is what's considered "liberal" thinking, because the people who tend to believe in that tend to believe in other causes believed to be "liberal", such as the concept of equal gay marriage, or legalized abortion. You don't have to be liberal to believe in it, but it is "liberal" thinking.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:58:10 UTC from web-
@mrmattimation That doesn't really explain why. My theory is that liberals tend to put more trust in the government than conservatives.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:03:27 UTC from web-
@pony Probably because the government isn't some menacing monster out to destroy the world.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:06:18 UTC from web-
@mrmattimation Gevornment is necessary and good generally. By trust, though, I mean that liberals tend to want to rely on it more. Conservatives tend to rely more on individual responsibility.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:11:46 UTC from web-
@pony that's the thing isn't it? Individuals can NOT be trusted to be responsible
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:13:00 UTC from web-
@rarity I believe the collective may be trusted just as much as individuals.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:16:09 UTC from web-
@pony then why trust anything at all?
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:17:03 UTC from web-
@rarity When you can't trust others, trust yourself to be the change you want to see, I say. Of course, always band together with like-minded people whenever possible, but if you must stand alone and you truly believe you're in the right, then you'd lose all self respect and worse to just go along with what others want.

@redsnowcone @mrmattimation I've heard first hand accounts of how gun ownership has stopped crime. I've never heard of a civilian gunfight breaking out in the middle of a shooting except for gangs, but they'll have guns whether the law permits it or not. That's the stupid thing. Gun laws are only /well/ enforced among the law-biding.
Tuesday, 08-Apr-14 23:58:21 UTC from web-
@pony I'm sure there are cases to support both sides of the coin. In Britain, (with the exception of Northern Ireland,) it is general policy that police officers do not carry firearms on their person, and the results are conclusive. Gun crime is extremely low.

@oracle in some places there still are.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:07:06 UTC from web-
@pony @oracle At least I think so. I don't really know. I mean, nothing like, war-ready is permitted to my knowledge, but I'm only speculating.

@oracle head out into international waters and shoot till your hearts content.
Wednesday, 09-Apr-14 00:09:58 UTC from web -
@oracle That's the thing. Gun control doesn't necessarily mean "NO GUNS EVER". Permits can still be issued. I think it's really cool if you're a law-abiding citizen who wants to get some really awesome weapons and shoot up a can or something, so long as you have a special permit, which ideally is not acquired from going to a gun store and saying "HEY I WANNA SHOOT STUFF WHAT'S THE BEST PERMIT FOR ME"

@oracle When have I ever demonstrated otherwise? (Don't answer that.)
