  1. I'm not saying Family Guy used to be Disney or anything like that, because it was never AMAZING, but the animation shouldn't get WORSE as a show progresses. Same deal with the Simpsons. God, I love the Simpsons, but the animators had so much more freedom back in the 90s.

    1. @mrmattimation blame "on model" being so important for the decline in the simpsons' animation quality. Although the writing is actually really good in the latest series. Family Guy has been on a pretty swift decline since they decided they had to be offensive and crass to hold their audience.

      1. @scoot Man I haven't watched ANY of the new season. I really should.

        1. @mrmattimation You totally should. It's really quite good

      2. @scoot And so we're clear, I'm not at all blaming the animators, because it's not their fault. It's mostly the higher-ups telling them that they need to be as on-model as possible.

        1. @mrmattimation I know, as I said it's this weird decision that staying on model is important. It's cripped Spongebob

          1. @scoot I can't even bear to watch modern Spongebob

              1. @scoot And this one, showing the frames used in each version. http://i.imgur.com/7lpD7Uk.jpg. 1989: 24 unique frames for that whole movement. 2009: 5.

                1. @mrmattimation I know, I don't need the breakdown to see that. Her whole motion in the new one is just robotic and lifeless, her reaction doesn't even make sense, she's smiling before she should really have reacted

                  1. @scoot According to the animator who did that shot, they took his original shot, chopped it up, cut it down, and did this weird tween thing with Maggie's arm at the end.

                    1. @mrmattimation Yeah I see the very jerky and weird looking fist shake part, it's so clearly a last minute decision. I'd be super mad if they did this to my scene. It's obviously to cut time but it's so terrible.

    2. @mrmattimation IMO despite having a lot more frames and stuff they were pretty damn ugly back then.

      1. @nerthos Oh yeah, character designs were really ugly, but at least the animation wasn't super stiff. And it was all on paper, too. They have MORE technology and a bigger budget now than they did then, the animation itself shouldn't have gotten worse.
