  1. So I'm reading this Tumblr post about how rape culture is displayed in the Twilight Saga, specifically citing a passage in Eclipse in which Jacob sexually assaults Bella. The original poster says that the novel tries to eroticize rape. Like, ok, that's really bad and all, and I've never actually read the book, but isn't Jacob, like, the bad guy or something?

    1. @mrmattimation He's the hunky rival to the protagonist and a good guy.

        1. @mrmattimation My wife and I disagree that Jacob's behavior promotes rape since he only forced a kiss. It does promote unrealistic expectations and an unhealthy controlling stalker-ish relationship up until Bella becomes a vampire herself. In the Edward's, the protagonist, defense, though, Bella was really accident prone, and Meyer does a good job of showing how she'd basically be dead many times over if it weren't for Edward's compulsion to protect her.

        2. @mrmattimation Also, my wife, the feminist, says that exaggerating the severity of a forced kiss only serves to minimize how awful rape truly is, so basically the person who said that is dumb.
