  1. You guys talking about cool programming languages is making my Java-worshipping ass feel bad. :(

    1. @redenchilada I prefer C for game programming, Scheme for scripting, and Korn shell for scripting and systems programming. :-)

      1. @loveydoe The most I've done is a bit of C work for a game project I got pulled into working on... I don't really know any of it. (Honestly the only language I'm super-comfortable in is PHP... the joys of web development?)

          1. @loveydoe I'm so confused as to what a good portion of those are supposed to be

            1. @thewaifutyphoon Do you program or interact with programming language communities?

Monday, 14-Jul-14 06:52:37 UTC from web
              1. @loveydoe Nah. I tried CodeAcademy for all of about 2 hours and then forgot about it.

                1. @thewaifutyphoon I see. I'll explain in a series. C is the oldest language on the chart; notice how dated its cells look. To languages with bursting libraries of functions and data types, C might seem obsolete or painful.

                  1. @loveydoe I know that C is super old and that PHP is web programming, but that's pretty much my entire knowledge of that chart

            2. @thewaifutyphoon PHP is used for web programming, but from what I remember, it misses consistent naming for its standard functions and modules, and has many obsolete function names still littering the standard library. The joke here seems to be that the managers of web-based companies saw that other sites used PHP, so they decided to use it too, despite some of its faults.

              1. @loveydoe What do you think of HTMLS?

Monday, 14-Jul-14 07:03:06 UTC from web
                1. @metaltao I've never heard of it! I have used plain old HTML before, though.

                  1. @loveydoe Not HTMLS? I beleive the "S" stands for secure...

                    1. @metaltao HTML is just markup and has no measures of security. You might be thinking of HTTPS, which is a secure web protocol?

                    1. @metaltao XHTML is a great standardization of the HTML syntax. For the DOCTYPE, though, plain HTML5 is much cleaner.

                      1. @loveydoe OK!

                2. @metaltao HTML5 is better than the other HTML standards, in my opinion. However, I have a generally low opinion of all Web protocols and encodings. I think it'd be cool if web apps were replaced with actual programs, run via a virtual machine. (see Inferno VM)

            3. @thewaifutyphoon The Java column reveals a feeling of bloatedness, complexity, and business that other languages see in it. Java is notorious verbose, but some would say its existence as a portable virtual machine and an industry standard outweigh its issues.

            4. @thewaifutyphoon Ruby has an extremely friendly community, full of companionship and free spirit. However, some groups see it as unprofessional, silly, hacky, slow, and ugly. Notice how its column is full of quirky people and strange creatures. I like its community, but for its language features, I think Lisp and Scheme serve better.

          2. @loveydoe The "Java as seen by PHP fanboys" panel confuses me because I honestly figured out Java way quicker than PHP :c

            1. @redenchilada It looks to me like it is showing Java as a super complex language, with all its classes, subpackages, interfaces, and methods.

    4. @c It is. My favorite bits are the type system, the CSP-style concurrency, and the simple error handling.
