    genuinely scratching my head because the piece that used to fit in a certain slot doesn't fit there anymore??

      @zeldatra Shift keys usually have a metal bar associated with them. check to see that is correctly placed.

        @techdisk No, yeah, I'm aware of the metal bar. My issue is one of the little plastic pieces which WON'T GO INTO ITS STUPID SLOT.

          @zeldatra You mean the little white peice that folds under the button? Make sure it's put in its place before you put the actual key back on. My laptop's keyboard is very unforgiving and that white part fit only one way out of a possible 4, or something, and it MUST be put in first.

              @zeldatra Look closely, again referring to my keyboard, you need to slot the bottom of that part in by sliding downwards, and then click the top half down.

                @techdisk alright, so right now the piece i'm trying to put in is the inner part of the plastic, not the whole part itself. my issue is that it won't fit into the bigger part because of two little tabs jutting out. there are little indentations for those tabs, but i can only fit one in at a time.

                @techdisk EDIT: the bottom hooks in by sliding UPWARDS, then the top clicks down.

        @techdisk (it's why I never remove any keyboard keys that are physically wider than a letter key. It never turns out well.)
