                                      1. @pandabear Certainly not flying mice, as many European languages (well German and Russian at least) translate their names into.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 02:55:12 UTC from web
                                        1. @awlditzy Closer to flying rats than anything, but still different. They deserve their own name for sure

Friday, 05-Sep-14 02:56:33 UTC from web
                                          1. @pandabear I think it comes from their early contact with bats, seeing them simply as flying rodents. Not knowing what they eat, or really anything else of them than probably their corpses at first.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 02:59:49 UTC from web
                                        2. @awlditzy the portuguese name is "morcego", that might mean something

Friday, 05-Sep-14 02:56:56 UTC from web
                                          1. @mushi The official term is Chiroptera

Friday, 05-Sep-14 02:58:30 UTC from web
                                            1. @pandabear yes, chirptera is their order. but all of them are named "morcegos"

Friday, 05-Sep-14 02:59:53 UTC from web
                                              1. @mushi Does "morcegos" mean something, or is it just the word for bat?

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:01:02 UTC from web
                                                1. @pandabear chiroptera would mean something like "finger wings" in greek, but "morcego", according to wikipedia, comes from latin and means something like "blind rat"

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:04:29 UTC from web
                                                  1. @mushi So it's pretty much the same as in the languages mentioned before.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:05:12 UTC from web
                                                    1. @nerthos but at least it is not "flying rat" so it is a bit more crative

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:06:24 UTC from web
                                          2. @mushi At least Portuguese and Spanish have more or less an actual word for bats. Although I couldn't tell you if they're formed words from something else.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:01:43 UTC from web
                                            1. @awlditzy wikipedia says is means something like "blind rat" from latin

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:05:16 UTC from web
                                              1. @mushi Oh... so the same or close to in Spanish. Well, no more nonsensical than flying mouse, but that's early contact with a species for you.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:06:19 UTC from web
                                                1. @awlditzy some peopel here actually say "ratos voadores" (flying rats), but as a pejorative way to call pigeons

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:10:00 UTC from web

                                                  2. @mushi Same in English and pretty much everywhere in Venice, ratti volati.

                                                    1. @awlditzy poor pigeons

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:11:38 UTC from web
                                                      1. @mushi Not their fault that people keep feeding them and the cathedral of San Michele looks like a very large shiny toilet.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:13:12 UTC from web
                                                        1. @awlditzy well, they need to eat

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:15:12 UTC from web
                                                          1. @mushi That was more a jib at the people who feed them despite signs and laws saying not to. During the day you can barely walk through the plaza of San Marco without stepping on one per foot.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:16:34 UTC from web
                                                            1. @awlditzy so, Brasília has a house for the pigeons http://www.cidadebrasilia.com.br/turismo/image/interest/mainImage/2000/pombal.jpg . people like buying popcorn and thrwoing it for them. We used to play running trhought there to see who would not get dirty because we were dumb children

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:20:43 UTC from web
                                                              1. @mushi Certainly a better idea than allowing them to dump their filth all over old buildings like pretty much everywhere else... oh wait this is more like an aviary than a quarantine.

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:22:29 UTC from web

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:27:12 UTC from web

Friday, 05-Sep-14 03:28:21 UTC from web
