        @beatstrings The word "tao" is sort of an enigma because it was orignally written in that form by an author with no proper understanding of Chinese, so it was viewed as an approximation of the way the orignally hanzi would be pronounced as translated through the old Wade-Giles romanization system, as opposed to the newer Pinyin romanization system which writes the word as "dao".

            @metaltao @metaltao Basically there are two systems of romanization from hanzi, one that is older and one that is newer, the former translating 道 as "tao" and the latter translating it as "dao". Despite this, both romanization systems use the "dao" pronunciation of the word.

              @northernnarwhal Ah, good, so it is still Pronounced that way... and I will note this, I have met some angry people who said I spelled Tao Wrong. ADN, I was not sure if they were wrong themselves entirely.

                @metaltao "Tao" and "Dao" are both correct spellings, it's just that "dao" is the only correct pronunciation.

                    @metaltao The original romanization system for hanzi to English was built on an imperfect understanding of Chinese. Because there were multiple Chinese dialects to convert, consonants were initially used very sparingly, so something like the 't' in "tao" would signify a 'd' sound whereas if you wanted a 't' sound you needed to write "t'ao" in the old system.

          @northernnarwhal It pretty much is a tonal word, but I was corrected many times by my English teacher that it was modernized to "Dou" or "Duu" for some reason. Therefore it got hardwired to me when I did a monologue about Chinese Philosophy.

            @beatstrings I've never heard or read of it being modernized as "duu", as far as my knowledge goes there are no other spellings outside of the 2 romanization systems.
