  1. My great-grandfather's involvement in WWI is actually fairly interesting. He came to this country basically as a way to not die. He was in the front (german soldier, quite young at the time. Late teens to early twenties) and at one point his commander told the regiment that they were going to be overrun that night, regardless of how well they fought. He also told them that there was a boat about to sail to America, not sure if they knew exactly where, just somewhere in the continent. So he and his brothers in arms were given the option to stay and die, or hop on the boat with only what they were wearing. He and a bunch other men took the boat, and ended up somewhere in central America, then hopped on either the same or another boat to Argentina. Got jailed for desertion as prisoners of war for a while until the war ended, and then started a life in a rural area, settling and growing crops and raising animals.

    1. @nerthos Wow. That's quite the loyal commander, that is, to his men. World War I is an area of history I really need to read up on, don't know too much about it besides what started it.

      1. @awlditzy Yeah, it was their commanding officer, not a higher up. Likely sharing the fate of his men there, just slightly above in the chain of command. I don't think he was ALL that older either. He knew they'd be wiped out and wouldn't do much of a dent in the enemy advance, so why waste so many lives?

        1. @nerthos Well the officer's seeming mantra back in those days was 'do it anyways and shoot any one who tries to go the other way'.

          1. @awlditzy Oh, yeah, won't deny that was common. Hence why fragging started becoming popular in that war.

    2. @darkw00d I don't know much about my bloodlines above my grandfather's parents and grandparents. Too much immigration and emmigration during the early XX century due to the situation in Europe.

    3. @darkw00d Wow, ok, that's really interesting. But yeah, staying in one place makes tracking easier. I have a harder time with that since there's a lot of traveling involved in my family. Last three generations have involved some degree of moving for marriages too.
