in my 3rd semester i had some experiments on simple electronics circuits and they were real coring

@mushi *boring

@mushi The fun comes when you build stuff like coilguns.

@nerthos i imagine it can get fun later, but the experiments were like "build this pointless circuit then measure stuff on it"
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 21:52:35 UTC from web-
@mushi Oh, yeah, that's the boring part. Likely the first fun thing you'll build will be a photocell (?) that thing that reads light intensity, or a wave emitter.

@nerthos yes, actually, i've had a short of class on it on a mini course on creating lab instrumentaion and it looked real fun, but it didnt helped much

@mushi the professor showed us PICs and stuff

@nerthos Oh, I know the fundamentalism's around coilguns. The problem is that I have no idea how to hook up the hardware, even if I do probably have all what I need.. or used to... not sure...

@critialcloudkicker It's super simple except for the part where you have to build a circuit so that the coils turn on in order.
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 21:57:31 UTC from web-
@nerthos Yeah. A little embedded circuitry so you can adjust the timing. That is what I'd need. I'd probably start out from scratch again too, like a breadboard with LED's.

@nerthos I remember my first coilgun, I made it over a month, placed a printed target on a stack of cinderblocks to test the accuracy, the mangoing ball bearing pierced 3 solid blocks and drilled itself half a meter into the dirt XD
the accuracy was FrankerZ, but the worst part was that that thing overheated so much all the plastic components around and under the coils meltedSunday, 28-Feb-16 22:11:48 UTC from web-
@zennx You need a longer barrel, more separation between the coils, and something to cool it down.

@nerthos nah, coil sepparation isn't THAT big of a deal when dealing with heat dissipation ( from a theoretical standpoint anyway ). But what would you recommend to keep it cool with ? like 9 CM square computer fans ? Should work to keep the mechanisms cool, but the actual plastic ?
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:24:07 UTC from web-
@critialcloudkicker Honestly I'd add a few aluminium dissipators to it.
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:26:29 UTC from web-
@nerthos @critialcloudkicker And by that I mean add a wooden or plastic grip, and replace the sides of the case by dissipators. A 12v fan or two would be really useful but would be a big drain on the battery.
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:31:08 UTC from web-
@nerthos the voltage of the fan, or fans, is pretty much negatable in computer-case airflow ( and casemods ). And I have been modding quite a few of those in a previous life. I'd prefer to have 1 side covered in 5v fans, even if just run at 3v ( they can handle that, no problem ), as long as the wattage count is lower than 1 12v fan, which is pretty easy to do. ... Ofcourse I have no idea how dense you want to make your coilgun. or where any plastic parts are
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:41:49 UTC from web-
@critialcloudkicker Well, I suppose you could. I just try to avoid any passive energy consumption to maximize efficiency.

@nerthos Ohh, like big aluminium heat fans ? ... They sorta are really good at keeping cool whatever they stick to, but they don't do much else
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:34:52 UTC from web-
@critialcloudkicker Yep. And that's the point. Just keeping the gun cool.

@zennx Also try using ceramic or bakelite for electric isolation rather than common plastic. They handle temperature much better.
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:18:59 UTC from web-
@nerthos it wasn't for insulation, it was the frame it just melted, I reduced the voltage by 60% and it stopped doing that
Sunday, 28-Feb-16 22:24:00 UTC from web-
@zennx Then use a wooden frame instead of plastic, so you can keep the power without melting issues.
