            1. @scribus You pretty much have to find, catch, and grind a Mankey (so it can learn Low Kick) before Pewter so you can stand any chance against Brock's Onix, since Pikachu is useless against it and your only other options at that point in the game are Flying and Bug types.

              1. @narwhal This is also what you have to do if you choose Charmander in the original Red or Blue, but this is not the case in Fire Red and Leaf Green as Charmander learns Metal Claw at level 13 in Gen 3.

                  1. @eris Looking at it in terms of Gym Leaders early game, Bulbasaur is kind of an optimal pick. Grass is super effective against rock and water and resistant to electricity. Although I'm generally partial to the grass type starter in Pokemon games regardless, with maybe one or two exceptions.
