So, a friend is trying to get me to develop games in XNA. I'm not sure if I want to learn one of the most retarded non-cross-platform languages that exist to make a game for two platforms I hate: Microsoft Windows and the Xbox 360. I think I'll much rather continue development on my own game, which is cross-platform.

@omni but Windoze is cool! :c

@redenchilada It's not. It's the worst system I have used in my life, it's the main cause HTML5 and other web development has been kept back (Internet Explorer), the APIs are terrible (I tried to write a tiling window manager once, only to find out that, for some retarded reason, the Start button is considered a "window" in Windows), it isn't truly compatible with other versions of itself. Genuine Advantage often labels legal copies as illegal (like mine) and, well, I can go on somewhat longer but I've raged for long enough for now, in my honest opinion.

@omni I haven't had problems with it. :c

@redenchilada Because you haven't tried to seriously use it. The keeping back of web development is purely because Internet Explorer is pre-installed and has been quite incompatible with web standards ever since the first release. That is a fact and not related to you having problems with it or not. Windows is not only keeping web development back, but their proprietary standards and programming languages are keeping a lot of development back. Really, Windows is why we can't have nice things, and I can't wait until it falls into obscurity, it has been popular for way too long.

@omni I'm sorry we prefer different systems?
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:00:00 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Preferring a system due to the way it works (which is fine, everyone has their own taste in what kind of system layout is best) has nothing to do with how it purposely keeps development of cool things like HTML5 back by promoting proprietary, incompatible standards instead of accepting the already-specified official open standards. For example, Internet Explorer 9 STILL doesn't properly support Data URI (which was officially specified in 1998), something every other mayor browser, even SAFARI, supports.

@omni But I don't use IE.
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:06:35 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Until Internet Explorer is no longer installed by default on Windows my argument remains valid, because Internet Explorer still has a large enough market share for this kind of nonsense to be an actual issue to web developers who want to create cool things.
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:07:54 UTC from web-
@omni Your argument, applied to other subjects to reveal its underlying absurdity: "Some people grow up to be criminals. Therefore, we should kill all babies". "Some countries in the middle east promote terrorism, therefore, we should glass the middle east from space" and so on and so forth.

@ceruleanspark The only way I can see your reply to be valid is if it relates to me calling Windows evil, and only naming Internet Explorer as an example. The problem is, Internet Explorer isn't even close to the only thing that is wrong.

@omni "A small portion of a thing is bad, therefore we should destroy the entire thing"

@omni What IS wrong with it, then?
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:13:24 UTC from web-
@redenchilada For example, .doc (or its worse brother, .docx). But fine, you and @ceruleanspark somewhat win. Not EVERY part of Windows is terrible, and I chose my words badly.
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:15:42 UTC from web-
@omni Saying every part of anything is terrible isn't right. Nothing is completely flawed, the same way that nothing is completely flawless.

@scribble I never directly stated every part of Windows is bad, but the way I put it clearly sounded like I was implying it.

@omni What, exactly, makes .doc so bad?
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:17:17 UTC from web-
@redenchilada .doc is bad because we have official standards for saving documents, the OpenDocument standards, denoted by .odx (with x showing what kind of document we're dealing with). Even the latest version of Microsoft Office doesn't properly support these standards, being the only one in the most-used office suites not supporting these. Because Microsoft Office is the most used office suite, we're being forced to adapt to their standards (of which they don't share the specifications), so other office suites (which do support the official standards) cannot work as well as Microsoft Office does, which is, at very least, anti-competitive, but also prevents improved development of the Open Standards. Because of that, even in the year 2012, we still cannot properly share office documents throughout different operating systems and office suites.

@omni Sounds like something that'll just have to be dealt with, then? Like it or not, Windows isn't going away any time soon, and it's not likely to forgo IE in favor of some other default browser.
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:10:02 UTC from web-
@redenchilada "Deal with it" isn't an appropriate response. That's like stealing from a store and, instead of stopping to steal, telling the shop owner to just buy more goods so they still have enough left to sell.
Monday, 16-Jul-12 19:13:18 UTC from web-
@omni But Windows isn't stealing anything... I don't follow.
