Maybe they were great horned owls, I did only just now realize that they looked like they had ears and that birds don't have ears. So I guess there were tufts and I am a terrible bird watcher.

@scribus The horned owl has tufts, but they never really go down. Screech owls also have them but either they can fold or only one sex has them as I've seen pics with and without.

@scribus Honestly if I have to risk it, due to location and size and the fact that they didn't have tufts I'd say it was likely a barn owl or short eared owl.

What's more their ears are not symmetrical
This allows them to calculate not just where sound comes from, but also it's it's relation in height and latitude

@zennx Well I know they have the organs but it's not like an externally visually distinctive feature
