@widget Hey, while the topic's up, using the subscription tags highlights the tag like a user mention, but for the person who posted the notice, not the users it's responding to. Would it be possible to change it to highlight the users it responds to?
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:11:34 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I think that might require an extra API call to find out who is actually a member of that tag.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:12:21 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I'm aware, which is why I'm asking. A shame such a thing can't be easier to check. :/
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:13:33 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Sounds like something to overcomplicate my statusnet replacement with.

@toksyuryel Are subscription tags even supported in the API?
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:13:56 UTC from web-
@redenchilada For fetching data on them? Nope!
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:14:19 UTC from web-
@minti That's stupid. StatusNet needs a more complete API.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:15:25 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I would hesitate to call the thing statusnet has now an "API", but this seems to be the new definition of API given to us by marketers.

@toksyuryel PAI. Psuedo Application Interface.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:20:08 UTC from web-
@minti PAI = portuguese for father

@toksyuryel I never learned what API actually means, just that it's a buzzword for things meant for off-site programs to use :/
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:20:35 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Application Program Interface, it's something one program can use to interface with another.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:21:15 UTC from web -
@redenchilada Application Programming Interface: an Interface for Programming your Application. It's what you use when you're working with a library of some form or another to make use of that library's code in a way that hopefully doesn't make you want to tear your hair out (no guarantees on that though- if it's a badly-designed API, you'll probably still incur some hair loss)
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:23:47 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel Oh, that makes sense. I've used _that_ kind of stuff in non-web coding, so :p
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:24:35 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Now imagine using another application as your "library" and you start to get into the kind of APIs you see on the web.

@widget Sounds fine to me. It'd just be nice to be supported on-site, even though I'm probably the only person ever who uses it.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:17:39 UTC from web -
@widget You send an HTTP request via a fully-formed URL and get an HTTP response containing a fully-formed XML or HTML document. Calling that an API just does not sit right with me.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:21:20 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel That's REST. It's a type of API. lol.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:21:59 UTC from web-
@minti Part of this is likely my hatred of using a markup language for data that has no business being human-readable.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:24:47 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel the dancey rhythm game I play stores stats in an XML file :)
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:27:19 UTC from web-
@redenchilada WHY
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:27:31 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel You can actually open it up and read it. c: Seems like they spent a bunch of time making it look pretty with the XSL. Let's complain about Android's ApplicationManifest.xml instead :)
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:29:23 UTC from web -
@toksyuryel Oh, and in Sonic Generations/Unleashed's (encrypted) files, the player's attribute numbers for physics are stored in XML format too :)
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:33:20 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I weep for the state of modern software development.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:34:04 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I'm not finished yet! The tools for fast content generation posted and recommended by the Ludum Dare competition's site store things in XML files! :D
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:35:28 UTC from web-
@redenchilada >fast >xml
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:35:58 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel Er, I suppose I worded that wrong. The idea is to create content for games quickly, not fast file reads or something. Not that a different format couldn't be used, but eh.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:37:22 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Ah. Well XML can be fast in that respect if you're using a shorthand format to write it, so I can see that.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:38:22 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel ~It's not about _good_ software design, it's about _fast_ software design~
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:39:17 UTC from web-
@redenchilada Then why are Microsoft and Apple so successful when they take years to get around to implementing the features that Linux-based OSes have (and then try to pass them off as "new" features that *they* invented themselves)?
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:41:23 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel I refuse to get into _that_ argument. I've had enough OS-bashing from all sides.

@redenchilada WELCOMEPONY IS THE BEST OS

Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:43:16 UTC from web-
@redenchilada I know the reasons ☺ I was just trying to make the same kind of jokes you do.
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:44:03 UTC from web-
@toksyuryel Your tactic is all wrong, in that case. You're supposed to protest something by writing something that sounds like you legitimately believe it's good, and then rewriting it ~LiKe ThIs~

Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:23:18 UTC from web -
@widget "they interrupted our REST to make us code this"
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:23:52 UTC from web -
@widget It's basically the blanket term for all "Send HTTP request, service acts on request and returns data depending on request". As opposed to... I can't think of any other web-based APIs that aren't REST...
Saturday, 21-Jul-12 02:26:04 UTC from web -
