@techdisk42 Hacker's Keyboard is certainly neat for coding, but really rather unwieldy for actually conversing with folks, I find.

@bitshift I turned off the 5 row thing for landscape. I switched because the default was giving me weird glitchiness when I pressed backspace.

@pony I made a dvorak keyboard by popping the keytops. Didnt last long. I know qwerty too well. Shame, I wanted to be weird with my keyboard.

@pony Honestly, I'd say either get a blank keyboard, scrape the letters off a regular one, or leave it deliberately different to your layout (i.e., QWERTY while the input is actually Dvorak). If you're already learning a new layout anyway, you may as well learn to touch-type at the same time, and having the (right) letters printed on the keycaps would only hinder that part of the learning process.

@bitshift @techdisk42 yeah xD I managed to use dvorak layout for a week on my normal keyboard once, but got so tired of it after a while.. With the ammount of typing I do it'd be great if I leanred to touch-type.. @pony I know he uses it because it's better for your wrists or something. And, as far as I know, he didn't change the physical keyboard layout

@flaredancer yes.. in fact, Qwerty was specifically designed to be the slowest keyboard for typists back when it was created in order to prevent type- writer jamming.. I think school would do well to teach kids typing on dvorak which is designed for speed.

@pony I knew that bit about Qwerty and the typewriters, but I didn't know it was designed to be the slowest. I thought it was just because everything was wonkey and now no one knew where stuff was. I didn't know dvorak was designed for speed, either.

@flaredancer yeah it's cool stuff! Dvorak (or something similar) was introduced first iirc., and when it caused major jamming was thrown out sort of. It puts all of the most commonly used letters on the home row, whereas Qwerty spaces them as much as possible.. I guess I should say Qwerty isn't so much designed for slowness as it is to space common letters enough to prevent jamming.. a little different

@flaredancer Yeah Dvorak or something similar was designed first then replaced. It has all the most common letters on home row. Qwerty is meant to space them out as much as possible. I guess that's not really designed to be slow necessarily, actually, but the effect is that it slows typing a lot.

@pony qwerty was made to make the most common words able to be typed faster. It was made to increase efficiency, not decrease.

@abigpony faster on a typewriter without jamming it, yeah.. I misspoke when i said slower.. that's just the typewriters' fault mostly I think. Dvorak is much faster still.

@pony no it was not made with the typewriter considered as much as worker efficiency. It was just made so they could type common words faster. There's a reason Dvorak wasn't the default keyboard when computer keyboards were produced.

@abigpony Well now you've got my curiosity piqued. I heard that Dvorak was designed first, and it's easy to see that Dvorak is faster.

Again, I misspoke about slowing down, but I corrected myself on that point. I think in the case of Qwerty, productivity was linked to the mechanics of the typewriters so it's true that it was designed for efficiency, but it was also limited by the type writer. I maintain that it was designed for typewriters still. Obviously though, it wasn't meant to slow down typists.

@pony I'd say: because some countries just wanted to be special and the people in those countries got used to it. It's the same thing wih the measurement of temperatures: Celsius is much more reasonable than Fahrenheit, especially since it translates so well into Kelvin. But if I grew up with Fahrenheit, I would use that.

@pony Well it was made so companies could get people to do more work and stuff and alot of places had training for qwerty and stuff and by the time computer keyboards came out, I think the efficiency just because the industry standard and more people knew it and stuff. Admittedly, I didn't know qwerty was easier on the typewriter, but I had heard that it was a rough transition.

@widget That's a whole differen matter - and the main reason why I don't know Dvorak. I even get confused when I use an english layout keyboard because it basically is muscle memory.

@widget I think it is a bit more than switching over. I have a pretty good idea how long ten kilometres are, how long I would need to walk that distance, etc. It's not jus that I know howit translates, I think in these measurements. If I think about a "big person", I think about a person who is 2 metres or larger.
