  1. Blergh, I'm writing an email [an application for work] to this lady I don't know that runs this dog care center [small business] I've never visited only because I know a guy that works there and is on close terms with the owner.... How do compose? q.q ~~ Anyone have any suggestions on this form of email? How formal/informal I should be and such?

    1. @haganbmj Not too informal, mention that you like dogs, and try to make a good impression. Stay humble.

      1. @nvrrmbr Yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm going to attach my general resume then add in some personal experience with dogs (owning a few, running a small animal-care business for 2 years that maintained customers on a daily basis, etc)

        1. @haganbmj Good idea. Just try to stay humble. Make yourself seem like someone perfect for the job. Try to not exaggerate. I'm kind of basing this off what I know of how the world works, seeing as I've never had an actual job.

          1. @nvrrmbr It's a small, rather informal gig - that's why I'm kinda unsure on how to approach it.

              1. @nvrrmbr Haha thanks. I've applied to a number of places already this summer with no luck, so hopefully this is the one that goes through.

    2. @haganbmj For an email to a potential employer, you definitely want to keep it formal. Talk with your friend first about what they might be looking for there, and what your potential boss finds important in a worker. Frame your email around this information. Do NOT ask about salary, benefits, etc. Tell her that you'd to further discuss this, in person or on the phone. If you don't hear anything back after a week, call or drop by. Above all, be polite and professional, but assertive and confident. I hope that this helps!

      1. @astra Good points, thanks for the info astra - I'm composing an email at the moment. I think the discussing in person (or at least on the phone) is a great idea.

        1. @haganbmj Very glad to help! Yes, the follow-up really does help your chances. It lets them know that it isn't just another resume' tossed into the wind, and that you're serious about a position there.
