I've noticed IRC channels to become more and more active when there are more users, up to a limit of about 50, and from then on the activity is just little, no matter how many users are there. It's... interesting.

@omni Smaller channels are tighter-knit, so you get more "hey how's it going" and "who wants to play a game", where bigger channels tend to annoy people if everyone's constantly doing that, so there tends to be little noise and more actual discussion. Personally, I like both kinds for their separate purposes. Small ones for making friends and big ones for discussing things.

@omni I saw an article explaining the idea (but with Twitter) a long time ago and I can't remember where I found it, but that was the gist of it. In smaller groups you know everyone, so you feel more comfortable around them. It's part of why I'm so active here, if we're honest!
