  1. @hakupony Completely random, but you kinda seem like the "free software" kind of guy, if I remember your previous discussions (though I can't recall you mentioning that exactly) so I was wondering if my gut is even slightly correct there? :x

    1. @omni I'm not too excited about it but I prefer free software

      1. @hakupony I see. Well, seeing how I ran out of people to bother with this thing I did I am somewhat happy and proud of: http://identi.ca/conversation/97545308

        1. @omni Yeah, that foundation fits you :)

          1. @hakupony I was like "Cool smartcard and supporting an organisation I think does something good" and now it's like "I get a free blog as well? A free Wiki page? An @fsfe.org e-mail which I can also use in XMPP? I can become member of a mailing list? Whoa, so much stuff...". Needless to say, I was a bit overwhelmed yesterday.

            1. @omni What will you use your blog for?

              1. @hakupony I have no clue, honestly. Perhaps I'll abuse it to share my CC-licensed music?

                1. @omni If it has a RSS function and is about something interesting, I'd subscribe :)

            2. @omni I wouldn't really support an organization endorsing the GPL.

              1. @kamikaze I do understand your point, but I don't consider the GPL to be a real problem. Of course, it is less free than the BSD licenses are, and I won't lie about that, but the GPL does a good job at "infecting" software to force it to be opened it. I know, it's far from "friendly", but it's a counter against proprietary software trying to effectively locking us out of their products by forcing them to release their products in such a way that we can enable ourselves to use it as well, even if they try to lock us out. Yes, the GPL infects software, but I personally don't consider it something bad, as I believe the results of it are good.

                1. @omni Well that contained a fair share of spelling mistakes. I hope it's still readable.

                2. @omni I know all these arguments. They just don't compute for me.

                  1. @kamikaze That's fine, I suppose. I guess we're in a similar situation as I am with my non-vegetarian friends who try to convert me back to eating meat. I just can't accept any of their argument. I hope you can feel better knowing that the FSFE does more than just pushing the GNU GPL, although I'm sure you already know that.

                    1. @omni Sure I know they don't just endorse the GPL. But to me the GPL is some kind of infectious disease threatening the very existence of my kind of Open Source. Oh and I'm a vegetarian, too. Have been for over 30 years. :D

                      1. @kamikaze Ah, cool. I think I've only been a vegetarian for about 2 years, but I lost count. I'm only 19, though, so it would be impossible for me to have been that for over 30 years. I understand your fear regarding the GPL. Let's ask you rather directly: If you would support one organisation regarding computing freedom, which one would it be and why?

                        1. @omni The CCC. And the answer is that warm and fuzzy feeling that tells you you're home. I also admire the EFF, note that both organisations are more about culture and society than endorsing free software. So if you'd say strictly software I'd have to join the FreeBSD Foundation.

                          1. @kamikaze Chaos Computing Club and Electronic Frontier Foundation, huh? Well, I do understand those choices. At least the EFF one, I don't know all that much about the CCC (although they seem like nice people). I didn't even know there was a FreeBSD Foundation.

                            1. @omni The CCC is difficult to explain. You have to experience it first hand. Start with considering that being a hacker transcends computing or even technology in general. Being a hacker is an approach to life. Go from there and you've got an idea what kind of people you deal with.
