(That's a genuine question, I mean I kinda understand but it's still odd how much gritty stuff exists for this fandom!)

    1. @neurario @theidiotking I laughed half way through when I couldn't take it seriously any more then I enjoyed the rest.

    2. @neurario Shouldn't have taken so much time to read it... first comic to ever make me cry...

    3. @neurario Maybe it's just that I've had a rough day, or maybe I'm tired, but I'm not usually this quick to cry... Maybe it's the fact that I equated that comic to the end of the show.

      1. @dlcentaur # I'm sorry. :( Why do people enjoy that kind of thing though? Is it something to do with fleshing out aspects of the world that the cartoon would never touch on (for obvious reasons)? Do we just like making characters suffer?

        1. @neurario as far as the brony community goes, a majority of us are already touchy-feely or outside the norm, more sensitive, special life circumstances, etc. So I find it normal that a majority of fanmade stuff will either be super-happy or super-sad. Either celebrate friendship or mourn loss.

          1. @crusader8 @dlcentaur sounds about right. Psychologically I imagine sadfics etc. serve to help authors and readers alike to face real life fears or loss.

            1. @pony Very true. That's why I love writing so much. :3

              1. @dlcentaur I've dealt with enough loss to learn what I need I hope. My preference is redemption fics since i feel I have more to learn in that regard.

                1. @pony THose are always touching. It really lifts you up as well as the characters when the story comes to a climax.

                  1. @dlcentaur Yeah. Luna's struggle and change come to mind.

              2. @dlcentaur @pony I guess it's just part of life, yeah. In daydreams I note that there tends to be a bit of everything of life, love, happiness, sadness... adventures in my mind always tend to be rather bleak (oh no, zambeez!) - I guess part of it for me is seeing how they react in those situations, how it would happen in their world and such

                1. @neurario Right. The thing I love about the show (and the lack of which has disappointed me thus far in Season 3) is the atmosphere. The incredible concept of a new world, with new things, and new history, and new secrets.

                  1. @dlcentaur well, magic duel had new world, new things, new history and new secrets. Scootaloo's episode had new world, things and secrets. Moh Appuh Fwittah had new world, things and history. And the premiere had CRRRYYYSTALLLLS

                    1. @crusader8 Magic Duel was probably the best in that regard. Love the opening scene.

                          1. @dlcentaur though random, I liked the existence of the mirror pond or whatever it was. IMO it was the equivalent of introducing a new monster in the show. Speaking of which, it would be nice to see the hydra again.

                            1. @crusader8 Well, seeing as its creature setup is based on Greek Mythology... I'm guessing we'll see it again soon.

        2. @neurario No, it's reaching an audience. Connecting the way we care about the characters to a new situation. Something we all have to deal with one way or another. Death. That's why I'm a Grim-Dark writer. I put my characters in dark situations so I can teach my readers lessons, make them look to the good things in their life, and enjoy life while they are living it.

        3. @neurario a lot of people make stuff like this in the fandom because we're all around the age when we're still learning to overcome life's greatest challenges and hardships http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRX2zdZ8k_k&list=FLtniQfwsxyiqKZI98biTo5Q&index=3

          1. I get a small headache when sadfics focus so much on loss while only minimally acknowledging what remains. It makes me think people want to stay sad or something, and that makes me want to knock some sense into them.

Monday, 07-Jan-13 09:28:41 UTC from web
            1. @pony this is most sadfics IMO so I avoid them generally so that I'm not constantly annoyed.

              1. @pony Good plan :P (Related note, I still haven't really read any fics... probably should, eventually, but it's no big priority to me xD

                1. @neurario I'm normally not very motivated to read, but I love the characters enough that I sought out stories that would let me enjoy them more. Gotta find a good writer though :3

                  1. @pony If you can stomach the length and grimness of the plot, Fallout: Equestria's glimpses of the past do a pretty good job of capturing the characters, I feel.

                    1. @bitshift It really doesn't seem like my type of thing. I might read it some day just to see what everybody talked about

            2. @pony Some people simply don't have the coping mechanisms to deal with loss. Which is all the more reason to educate them, but it's definitely not usually that they /want/ to stay sad.

        4. @neurario I can't say I know for sure why particular writers/artists do it (I suspect a bit of both options), but certainly for me the interest is in seeing the relatively rare ones that're pretty realistic, and touch on things the show just can't.
