I was talking to a customer at work today, and we got talking about hobbies. I mentioned I'm into Lapidary, though I haven't had a chance to do much lately. She then says "Sorry, could I ask you a question?" "Sure." "Are you autistic?" "No." "Oh, I just thought you might be because you like Lapidary." I mean come on! who equates a Lapidary hobby with autism?

@scoot It wouldn't normally, but I got teased a lot in school, and it brought back some unpleasant memories.

@pony true, the worst part was that she was so nice about it. I couldn't even get mad at her, so I just ended up getting grumpy in general.

@ceruleanspark apparently it's supposed to be a good hobby for people with autism... personally, I think it's just a good hobby in general.

@treesy People say looking after animals is supposed to be good for autistic people too.

@ceruleanspark exactly, but if you tell someone you have a dog, I'm betting they won't say "Oh, you poor dear..."

@neurario The common one is Equine Therapy, but I think it's generally reserved for comparitively early and moderate diagnoses.

@ceruleanspark @neurario The school I work at (for LD and Asperger's boys) has the kids take care of and learn to ride horses as well as a bunch of cats.

@pony I always get on well with cats. I've never really interacted much with horses.

@pony You work there? Interesting! Strange though... I'm not really the type to look after pets at all :/

@neurario Yeah. Before this job I worked with severely disabled folks living in group homes. With my current job I originally intended to work during the day (more with the boys) but instead I ended up as night watch. Still I get some interaction with them. It's a great job.

@pony I know the feeling, My mum works a a place that provides employment for people with disabilities. I've helped out a bit and I can honestly say they were some of the friendliest and positive people I've met.
