  1. It's bad when you're told that due to unknown reasons, the T-38 Talon you're flying has a 65% chance of killing you today.

    1. @fireshock Can't you, as a pilot, decide not to fly if it's not safe? And btw, it's probably parasprites in the engines...

      1. @heartstring As being a pilot in training, we almost all the time go up with an instructor... So if he says it's ok, we go. And most likely, you're probably right. Dang it Fluttershy, GET RID OF THEM!!

        1. @fireshock I'm actually curious now, what are the capabilities of the t-38? I mean, that's a trainer right? And which seat do you as the student sit in? the Front on or the rear one? Sorry about the questions, I have always wondered what it would be like to fly a plane, esp. a jet like the one you are flying in!!

          1. @heartstring The capabilities of the T-38? It was developed as a "Small fighter" for the Air Force, but due to aerodynamics and such, it was replaced by the F-5. After the F-5 came out, the Air Force adopted the T-38 mainly as a trainer for fighters (Though, out west there is one or two squadrons that still use the T-38 as a fighter, but those were replaced by the F-16 after the Thunderbirds "Diamond Crash") The seat depends on what we're doing that day. If it's normal flying, then it's the front seat... Weapons run, rear. I've flown both Props and Jets... The Jets, of course, win by a longshot.

            2. @fireshock So cool... What's it like, to move that fast through the air? I mean, the lat g's alone must be a killer when turning, I cant imagine pulling out of a dive... This is a bit of a stupid speed-fanboy question, but have you ever reached mach 1?

              1. @heartstring Well, imagine you're in a passenger plane, except of being in the back, you're the pilot, and you're traveling 3 times as fast. Really, the air around you disappears, and it's just you vs. gravity. Funny story, for one of our training missions, we had to act as if our missile guidance was out, so that meant we had to dive bomb our target. Going 500 mph, releasing a bomb about 600-400 feet, and then yanking the joystick back so hard that you immediatly lose feeling in your feet. It's quite a feeling... That you can't really describe, because you can't fell it! xD... And as for your speed question. Twice, actually. Once at Barksdale with an F-16, and the other at White Sands Missile range with a F-14

                  1. @heartstring At some point in your life you need to fly a jet, whether it be by yourself or with an instructor... It's one of those bucket list things. And I know this is expected, but i've done this for so long now, i'm use to it... still exciting though

                    1. @fireshock I hope so, my eyes are pretty damn bad, but it is def. a dream of mine. For now I just have to be satisfied with jumping OUT of planes, not flying them. But someday........someday

                      1. @heartstring Even if you have bad eye sight, the Air Force still has planes that you can fly (Though flying a combat fighter is considerably harder to achieve with eye sight problems)

                        1. @fireshock Yeah, that's the problem, I would want to be a test pilot (because I have little regard for my own life). I fell in love with the idea when I saw this thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_X-15 ,something about the idea of flying THAT is, like, idk, totally indescribable. Maybe someone will come up with a cure for bad eyes. Or I could get eye surgery... Does that count?

                          1. @heartstring The only way to get astronaut stauts without actually trying. Believe me, test pilots are some of the most respected guys in the Air Force, because we all know that at some point, they might die, and it won't be their choice. Well, after breaking my ankle in BT, I had to have surgery on it (I basically have a metal ankle now) and I was still able to complete BT and continue on. So, I doubt they would have a problem with eye surgery... But i'll ask somebody about it, just to be sure.

                            1. @fireshock Just don't forget to show a bit of respect too for the guys on the ground that keep the planes from disintergrating in midair.

                              1. @colfax I think they know we respect them... And we have to, otherwise they can eff up our planes like there's no tomorrow. But it's common knowledge that pilots easily respect their ground crews more than the officers themselves

                            2. @fireshock Wow, thank you! I would really appreciate that! It would be hard though, as my path in life has already been carved out by music. I probably couldn't do both XD. Maybe in a perfect world...

                              1. @heartstring No problem. If I were you, go with the music career... Probably have a better chance of making something of yourself.
